After reading through some recent threads, I have observed that many people talk of the 70's and 80's, e.g. Music, Favourite T.V show's, Movies and clothing etc.

I thought it would be a cool idea to create a thread dedicated to our more youthful years.

So, let rip guy's 'n' gal's ...

Leg Warmers.........oh my god!

Aaron Kerr
Posted: 2006-11-22 06:01:41
Okay, I can't restrain myself haha... here are some of the things I dug as a kid.

T.V Programs :

The Wombles
Dukes of Hazzard (recently purchased the 3rd season DVD set, oh yes)
C.H.I.P.S
M.A.S.H
The A Team
Hong Kong Fooey
The Wizz Kids
R.T.R Countdown
Lucky Luke

Movies :

The Last Dragon (Have it)
No Retreat, No Surrender (Have it)
Delerious - Eddie Murphy (Have it)
KickBoxer
BloodSport (Have it)

Clothes :

Can't remeber any clothing items I actually liked as a kid, but I have many I disliked ...e.g:

-Stubbie Shorts (I had both the Tan and Light Blue Coloured variety)
-Roman Sandals (Hated them so much, I used to hide them in the bushes of a near by alleyway on my walk to school, and retreive them upon returning home)
-My Mum's home-made shirts (Sorry Mum)

On a positive note, I dug chicks who wore leg-warmers

Music :

The Karate Kid Soundtrack
Bon Jovi
Gun's 'N' Roses
Jimmy Cliff
Bob Marley
D.J Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince (Parents Just Don't Understand)

I enjoyed BreakDancing back in the day also, every kid down our street had a home-made pair of "Bop-Pants", there was 5-10 good-sized sheets of Lyno scattered down the pavement and many a Ghetto-Blaster dropping Fat Beats.

Oh, and I was a gun at Marbles also, I remember many a fight breaking out over that game haha

I must have missed that boat mate, I can't recall ever seeing a pair of bright yellow socks over these ways, maybe they were out-lawed or summink.

Speaking of Boats, I used to watch "The Love Boat" ...I think I used to have a crush on that chick "Julie" on there.

...along with Olivia Newton John (from Grease), Madonna, oh and my Kindergarten Teacher haha

Just had a Flash-Back of when I got a C.H.I.P's T-Shirt (printed to look like the shirt that John and Ponch wore) and a plastic C.H.I.P's helmet (it felt like I had a plastic bucket on my head)

I used to terrorise the kids around the neighbourhood, trying to arrest them for any type of crime I could muster up in my 7 year old head.

I always wanted one of those C.H.I.P's Walkie-Talkie Bike Siren's, Hrmmm? I wonder if they still sell them?

As well as your staple green and yellow day glo socks, I would mix it up a bit and often wear a neon blue and vivid pink combo.

Failing that, green and orange was also a fave.

I used to really like pretending to be CHiPS on my BMX with my mates, or doing general BMX stuff like bunny hops (American and standard) and endo`s.

Playing army in the woods also used to be cool, plenty of crawling about in streams etc with cap guns.

Action Force figures were ace as well, after the Star Wars fad had died down a bit. Good old Cobra Commander and Baron Ironblood.

It used to be brill being a kid in the 80`s. No computer, no mobiles, just playing out with your mates and having a right laugh.

For those of you who didn't grow up in the 70's and 80's, here is a good example of what it was like ...hope you don't mind Rich

According to today's regulators and bureaucrats, those of us who were kids in the 60's, 70's and early 80's probably shouldn't have survived to this day because ........

Our baby cots were covered with brightly coloured lead-based paint which was promptly chewed and licked.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, or latches on doors or cabinets and it was fine to play with pans.

When we rode our bikes, we wore no helmets, just flip-flops and fluorescent 'spokey dokey's' on our wheels.

As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or airbags - riding in the passenger seat was a treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle and it tasted the same and we all shared a water fountain at school without fear of dying.

We ate chips, bread and butter pudding and drank fizzy juice with sugar in it, but we were never overweight because we were always outside playing.

We shared one drink with four friends, from one bottle or can and no-one actually died from this. Our parents encouraged us to share and didn't freak if we did so.

We would spend hours building go-carts out of scraps and then went top speed down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into stinging nettles a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We would leave home in the morning and could play all day, as long as we were back before it got dark. No one was able to reach us and no one minded.

We did not have Play stations or X-Boxes, no video games at all. No 99 channels on TV, no videotape movies, no surround sound, no mobile phones, no personal computers, no DVDs, no
Internet chat rooms.

We had friends - we went outside and found them.

We played elastics and rounders, and sometimes that ball really hurt!

We fell out of trees, got cut, and broke bones but there were no law suits.

We had full on fist fights but no prosecution followed from other parents.

We played chap-the-door-run-away and were actually afraid of the owners catching us.

We walked to friends' homes even if they were more than 200 yards a way.

We also, believe it or not, WALKED to school; we didn't rely on mummy or daddy to drive us to school, which was just round the corner.

We made up games with sticks and tennis balls.

We rode bikes in packs of 7 on the road and wore our coats by only the hood.

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke a law was unheard of...They actually sided with the law. We WERE
told off!

This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers and problem solvers and inventors, ever. The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas. We had freedom,
failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all.

And you're one of them. Congratulations!

Pass this on to others who have had the luck to grow as real kids, before lawyers and government regulated our lives, for our own good.

For those of you who aren't old enough, thought you might like to read about us.

This, my friends, is surprisingly frightening......and it might put a smile on your face:

The majority of students in universities today were born in 1986........They are called youth.

They have never heard of We are the World, We are the children, and the Uptown Girl they know is by Westlife not Billy Joel.

They have never heard of Rick Astley, Bananarama, Nena Cherry or Belinda Carlisle. (possibly not a bad thing of course....)

For them, there has always been only one Germany and one Vietnam.

AIDS has existed since they were born.

CD's have existed since they were born.

Michael Jackson has always been white.

To them John Travolta has always been round in shape and they can't imagine how this fat guy could be a god of dance.

They believe that Charlie's Angels and Mission Impossible are films from last year.

They can never imagine life before computers.

They'll never have pretended to be the A Team, Red Hand Gang or the Famous Five.

They'll never have applied to be on Jim'll Fix It or Why Don't You.

They can't believe a black and white television ever existed.

And they will never understand how we could leave the house without a mobile phone.

Now let's check if we're getting old...

1. You understand what was written above and you smiled.

2. You need to sleep more, usually until the afternoon, after a night out.

3. Your friends are getting married/already married.

4. You are always surprised to see small children playing comfortably with computers.

5. When you see teenagers with mobile phones, you shake your head.

6. You remember watching Dirty Den in EastEnders the first time around.

7. You meet your friends from time to time, talking about the good old days, repeating again all the funny things you have experienced together.

Just realised this morning we were able to play in the street a lot more, going on out bikes on the road, making jumps for them etc. Kids cant do that anymore, maybe due to more cars and chav fool drivers speeding around everywhere.

Innocent martial arts were big in the 80`s as well. I used to love pretending to be a ninja, making my own throwing stars etc. Ninjas were indestructible in the 80`s.

There was even a best selling C64, Amstrad, Atari etc computer called The Last Ninja.

Yeah Phil, I know what you mean, we used to play games on the road down our street, if a car was to come down the street ,it would drive slow and you would see this wave of kids merge onto the footpath (like the parting of the seas)

I done the Ninja thing also, used to make my own throwing stars too (until I was at a grade where I was able to buy the real macoy) , I even taught my Mother and Step-Father how to throw them.

Daz, I was into Miami Vice as a kid also ...I thought Sonny Crocket was the man back in the day ...looking back now, he looks kinda camp with the pink shirt tucked in and no socks.

Oh Hell Yeah! ...I used to dream about waking up and there would be either a Mongoose or Redline BMX gleaming in all it's glory at the foot of my bed, never happened though ...so I saved up and went halves with my Mum in buying my mates second-hand HMX ,he had snapped the frame and his Dad had re-welded it, it was still cool to me though.

My Step-Daughter has a Mongoose now, I try to sneak a ride on it but always get caught by the Missus!
Aaron Kerr
Posted: 2006-11-30 21:00:32
Okay, this might seem a little weird, but I woke up one morning with my Mum yelling at me because I had taken my BMX to bed, she had come in to wake me up and she saw the handle-bars sticking out near my pillow, she ripped the covers off me to reveal me cuddled up to my bike, there was grease every where, she was spewing! HaHa ,oh to be 12 again!

I used to do the same thing with my first Karate Gi, I would wear it to bed any chance I got ...now all these years I thought I was a weirdo having these fetishes, but I have recently discovered that my Missus and her daughter both wear their Thai-Shorts to bed, my Step-Daughter even wore her Hand-Wraps to bed once, only to wake up with purple swollen fingers! ...the things we do!

Me and a good friend of mine, who's name I won't mention (Charlie Smiler) HeHe used to watch this movie at least 4 times a week without fail growing up (7 - 10 years old) ...I still have a copy of it.

P.S. I used to have a crush on "Vanity" in this movie

It's funny how you sung along to tunes when you were a kid... only to find out years later that the words you were singing were not even close to the actual words of the song!

LOL, Aaron mate you have started a society here brother.
This i the first topic on Ax (with more than 10 replys) that I have read each and every word. That was Choice!

LOL, I wanted to add things but everyone has already added them. But how about Grange Hill, The Two Ronnies, for the Aussie's "the Comedy Company with Colin Carpenter and Uncle Arthur", for Aaron A F T E R S C H double O L, After Scool (with Ollie Olson).

How's about the wrestling, WWF man. Not this fake ass Thai boxing K1 crap but real men like the Ultimate Warrior, Jake the Snake, Hulkster and Demolition!

You guys have mentioned the Chips, Miami Vices nd stuff but how many of you guys had the glasses. Just like on night rider (how many still have em?).

Belt Bags, wearing overalls as fashion, gum boots (welli's), Flares.

How many people had steps cut into their heads, with a rats tail or a mullet!

How many of you had your ear peirced with a big dangly skull earring.

And a Poison T-shirt!

Making bow and arrows out of Willow branches and string.
(and for the Kiwi's- arrows from Toi Toi bushes with a nail in the end to make em go further).

Jumping the cockys fence and riding his sheep! LOL

Grizzly Adams, the Wilderness family and Little house on the Prairie... cant spell but Good night John Boy, Good night Mary Ellen, Good night Grand Pa... the Waltons.... or did I just let everyone know I wasnt cool back then?

I loved "Our World" and nature hahaha

Waist Coats (Leather ones if you were super cool)

Fingerless gloves!!!

Playing Spotlight late at night...

Bull rush...

Stealing the parents piss and getting drunk for the first time...

Sunday School, I used to go so I could get a lollie (candy) and those little sticker things to fill up my Sunday School notebook.

I am getting un cooler by each word ay?

How about Black Beauty Pencils?

How about Carry round transistor radios and super cool people even had little speakers that could attach to their belts.

Ghetto Blasters...

Back Spins...

Man, when Cans of drink were in Tin cans...

Wham.... ah, flip it, yeah I listerned to Wham too. Blame the young hottie who lived next door and George Micheal was straight and cool back then.

Leaving your kids in the car was a good thing and not a sign of neglect. Taking the handbreak off while parked on a hill was the worst that could happen.

Being dropped off at a local town park for hours on end while parents were at the pub!

Debbie does Dallas... Dallas, Falcons Crest and Dynasty...

How about the Dalls Cowboy cheerleaders.

Milk Bottles with cream under the lid, not a 50 50 mix of milk and water at twice the price...

Potatoe Chips came in 3 flavors and only three flavors...

Being sick home from school was not a decent excuse but Deer stalking, pig hunting and white baiting with the old man was a liable reason to skip a few days...

2 lollies (candy, sweets) for 1 cent! Now the smallest is 10 cent...

Having a scrap at the bikeshed was no cliche and actually meant having a scrap at the bike shed!!!!

J1, J2, Standard 1, 2 and 3....

Having a Rambo knife in camo colors with a compass, fish hooks and string and stuff...

Star Wars, Alf and ET.... Mork and Mindy!!!!!

Sting brother! ...cheers for your comments, you have reminded me of so much more, it goes to show that even though we grew up 600 km's away from each other, we experienced many of the same things.

Some of your comments made me crack up man, good shit bro, here I was thinking only us local kids experienced many of the things you mentioned above. e.g. 2 lollies for 1 cent, our mates saying they were related to every kiwi sport icon etc etc

Hope you and your girls are well bro, have a happy and safe chrissy, and all the very best for 07' dude.

Ice blocks were 5 cents and you could walk anywhere without fear of being bashed and robbed (could be cos I never had anything to steal?!)
No seatbelts, stuffing every kid in the neighbourhood in the car 'cos you're going to the beach. (Until the door opened one day and one fell out!)
Road trips to grandparents in Hawke's Bay (sunniest place in New Zealand - I don't care how many hours of sunlight Nelson claims!)for Christmas holidays - six weeks in the sun, no sunscreen. Gran greeting us by saying "oooh, you're so pale, don't you get any sun in Auckland - we'll soon fix that".
Swimming in the river. It's too shallow now from all the mega dairy farms using it to irrigate.
The sun shone more then, tar melted on the streets and life was simpler - or is it just that I'm OLD!
