KTMMA makes the Chinese Connection!

Since its inception in November 2013 KTMMA the dynamic new fightsport of the 21st Century has consistently brought top class professional International talent to England’s Capital to compete against some of our finest home-grown talent. Across three events (including an initial showcase) the KTMMA promotion has brought over fighters from Europe, Japan and the United States but KTMMA 3 has raised the bar even further by having 10 incredible England versus China bouts.

The Chinese are rarely seen competing on these shores and to have 10 top Chinese fighters on one show in the UK is unprecedented but due to a ground-breaking deal between KTMMA and the Chinese promotion WLF (Wulinfeng) London will showcase 4 KTMMA rules and 6 WLF kickboxing rules bouts in March. This deal is a major coup for the KTMMA team as Wulinfeng, founded in 2004, is the most prestigious and largest combat sports event in China. The company has held hundreds of events all over the world, including Beijing, Shanghai, Tokyo, Las Vegas, Hamburg, New Zealand, Kuala Lumpur, Thailand, Ireland and Seoul.

Wulinfeng is also renowned as a great televised sport-entertainment programme that attracts not only sports fans but also many regular TV viewers and KTMMA 3 will be broadcast in China by Henan TV to over 150 million viewers. Transmitted by the satellite“Zhongxing 6B”, the HNTV signal can be picked up from Europe, Asia, and Oceania, reaching 53 countries in total, 72% of the world’s population.

Wulinfeng’s stated aim is to build an international platform, to promote China’s martial arts to the world and this is exactly what will be happening on Saturday 14th of March when the ILEC Conference Centre in Earls Court London will play host to this epic England versus China fight-night with the Capital getting its first taste of WLF rules Kickboxing as KTMMA truly goes global. This is quite simply an event not to be missed as our finest English fighters ready themselves for the Chinese invasion and the opportunity to become global stars as they make the Chinese connection!

KTMMA 3 announces 4 major additions to its line-up.

As the epic KTMMA 3 England versus China card takes shape we are pleased to announce four excellent matches; two under full KTMMA rules, two under WLF rules but all guaranteeing explosive action. The KTMMA bouts will feature unbeaten KTMMA veteran Josh Palmer and the unpredictable and often outrageous skills of Galore Bofando as he makes his KTMMA debut. Palmer will be facing Wang Guan, Bofando Nuerla Mulal both experienced, quality opponents.

Urban Kings Fighter Palmer is no stranger to foreign opposition, having beaten the tough and durable Brazilian Joao Nogueira by split-decision at KTMMA 2. A dynamic Muay-Thai specialist, Palmer is transitioning well to KTMMA rules and this was a big victory against a far more MMA experienced opponent from a superb gym who was on a 3 fight winning streak. Palmer although vastly experienced in the stand-up game is still finding his feet when it comes to MMA and Guan a well-rounded MMA fighter will give him another tough test, especially as the majority of his wins have come by way of KO or TKO. KTMMA is a happy hunting ground for Josh, however, and he proved capable of dealing with his opponent’s ground-skills in beating Nogueira and will be looking for yet another International scalp this time around.

Galore Bofando, who trains out of the London Shoot fighters also comes from a striking background, like Palmer having an excellent career in K-1 and Kickboxing before transitioning to MMA. Bofando is known as an entertainer, flamboyant and unpredictable, which makes him a real fan favourite. He has also successfully transitioned to MMA rules but his KO wins still reflect his stand-up background and skill set. With his opponent Mulal a former boxing champion this could prove to be the explosive fight of the night, so don’t bet against a KO finish from either man.

The two bouts under WLF rules over 3x3 minute rounds are equally impressive match-ups and feature UK K-1 champion Kerrith Bhella in action against Hu Yafei and Ruth Ashdown taking on Gong Yan Li, a match between arguably two of the best female fighters in the World at their weight.

Firewalker’s Bhella is a seasoned K-1 specialist and is both a K-1 English and British Muay Thai champion. Bhella recently made his debut in Japan and scored a memorable victory over Yuya Yamamoto in a thrilling battle that emphasised Kerrith’s class, grit and determination. He will need all these attributes once more as he takes on tough sanda exponent Yafei, another experienced campaigner. In his war with the Dutchman Marcel Verhaar late last year Yafei, from Dojo Dadangxiang, proved an aggressive front foot fighter with solid boxing skills, some flamboyant kicks and a strong chin, so on paper this is a very tough match for Bhella and promises to be non-stop action given both men’s style.

Lumpini Crawley’s Ruth Ashdown is a welcome addition to the KTMMA roster with an impeccable pedigree as she is the ISKA and WBC World Muaythai Champion. Ashdown will need to be at the top of her game as KTMMA have matched her with one of China’s top female fighters, Gong Yan Li, known as the Queen of KO and the Chinese and Asian Sanda Champion. With a record of 24-1 Yan Li is a formidable opponent but Ashdown has all the right credentials having proved her mettle beyond doubt when she took the World title from the Australian champion in Australia with a performance that left no doubt in the minds of the judges. Against Gong Yan Li Ruth will need another huge performance in what could prove to be the fight of the night.

Saturday 14th of March is when these thrilling matches take place as part of KTMMA 3, the future of Combat Sports live from the ILEC Conference Centre in Earls Court London.

KTMMA 3 hosts ISKA World Title fight between two of Britain’s finest!

KTMMA has been making headlines recently with the major announcement that KTMMA 3 will see the WFL’s top Chinese fighters take on England’s best in an incredible series of international bouts, creating a breath-taking card that has really captured the imagination. If this were not enough, however, KTMMA 3 also features a domestic Kickboxing bout with a World Title at stake, which would easily headline any number of shows, such is its quality. Reece Rowell, Essex kickboxing Academy’s dynamic Middleweight World Champion will defend his title against Cobra Gym’s Jon Durrant over 5x3 minute rounds.

Both men are KTMMA veterans with impeccable pedigree and the bout promises to be a classic with the champion actually giving away experience. Durrant is a credible challenger known for his stamina, durability and relentless style, having notched up 32 wins from his 44 outings, 14 by way of KO. Durrant is a British and Commonwealth champion in his own right and well-respected on the circuit. As mentioned, Jon is vastly experienced having tested himself across multiple disciplines, winning two British titles by the time he was 18 and he is currently Internationally ranked by the ISKA, WKA, IKF and WAKO Pro organisations.

Reece Rowell, under the tutelage of Steve Kerridge has quickly established himself as a household name in the kickboxing community with 20 wins from 25 outings, including 12 by way of KO. The younger of the two fighters, Rowell has also been fighting since he was a teenager and is now equally adept competing under Kickboxing or K-1 rules having won 9 of his 10 K-1 outings. Known for his speed, combinations and power, Rowell is mature beyond his years and proved this when he captured the ISKA World title in 2013.

Now these two established British stars will face off at KTMMA 3 for Rowell’s World Title and it is such a tantalising match that it can take the spotlight away from the incredible International showcase fights that surround it. Stylistically it promises to be a classic all-action bout and yet another reason to get your tickets for what is shaping up to be THE show of the year.

Jon Durrant: “My skills are at World level and I want that ISKA World Title badly!”

One of the most eagerly anticipated match-ups on a stacked KTMMA 3 card is the ISKA World title fight between the champion Reece Rowell and challenger Jon Durrant, a man who feels his opportunity has been delayed through no fault of his own- “I was due to fight for a world title when I was 24 but had to stop fighting for 5 years to look after my daughter, I'm a
single parent. The World title would be the pinnacle of what has been a pretty good career, I feel I've been a little unlucky in the past with personal issues and (not) having someone promote me properly. I had to take fights at short notice a lot. My skills, I feel are world level and I want that world title badly.”

Despite his desire, Jon is under no illusions about the task at hand and has a lot of respect for the man he wants to take the belt from. “I like watching Reece fight, I respect his skills and
the camp he is from. He is a worthy and proven world champion. I feel no pressure, but I
hope my experience may help find some answers to whatever Reece brings to the ring on the 14th.” To support that, Jon also points out that he has beaten World champions in non-title fights in the past and that all his fights since resuming his career have been against World-class opposition.

The proof is in his title haul, as recent fights have seen him pick up titles at cruiserweight and light heavyweight and he comes into this fight as the current British cruiser and light heavyweight champion and the Commonwealth light cruiserweight champion, as well as holding several versions of British and commonwealth titles across his career. He takes nothing for granted, however, adding “no predictions, if I learnt one thing from fighting it is that you can never predict, especially at this level.”

This fight though is matched at 75kg, a weight he hasn’t fought at since he was 18/19. He’s 35 now and deliberately took some time out to drop all the way down, so he could finish his career fighting for a massive title, and it doesn’t get bigger than an ISKA World title. “Preparation has been great I've taken quite a few months to naturally drop the Weight. I work with my long-time coach and friend Peter Irving and we work well together, I also coach quite a few fighters now, so training is going well with these guys too. Unfortunately my long time boxing coach Martin Holgate passed away last week so this has made me even more determined to put in a World title winning performance. I also have Tim Izli helping me a lot, it's great to be back working with Tim, he's a legend.”

While many see this World title fight as the cream of an already incredible fight card Jon is quick to point out that he loves the whole KTMMA concept- “KTMMA is a great show that
puts fighters first. It's not out to make a quick buck but to build fighters and pay them well. I'm very excited to be returning to KTMMA and I would like to thank everyone at Cobra gym and my sponsors Mantis7, prodigy entertainment and Herve Gallo.”

This is a fight not to be missed and takes place on Saturday 14th of March as part of KTMMA 3, from the ILEC Conference Centre in Earls Court London.

Reece Rowell: “the only prediction I will make is that win, lose or draw it will be the toughest fight Jon Durrant has ever been in!”

ISKA World Title fight KTMMA 3

Alongside the ground-breaking England versus China match-ups at KTMMA 3 there is also an eagerly anticipated bout for the ISKA World Kickboxing title between two veteran KTMMA fighters, challenger Jon Durrant and defending champion Reece Rowell. It’s been a rollercoaster few years for the champion, with notable highs and the occasional lows-“The last couple of years have been very good but I have had a few disappointing injuries. I won the ISKA world title in October 2013 which was obviously a massive high. I beat a fantastic Spanish fighter called David Pineda to win that title. The injury was a knee injury that kept me from fighting for 6 months in the middle of last year but I came back in December 2014 to beat Nigel Thomas by unanimous decision.”

Having fought predominantly K-1 style recently, Reece sees no problem switching back to kickboxing for his title defence as it is low-kick kickboxing, so as he sees it, it’s only “losing the knee.” It’s a match that Reece is really looking forward to but he certainly does not underestimate his opponent-“Jon is a fighter I respect. He will bring a very tough challenge and has been unlucky not to have a world title of his own. He has had lots of fights, more than me but I am training very hard and believe I will still be the world champion by the end of the night.”

Preparations for this epic contest have been good for the champion, with sparring, conditioning and running all well on course and Reece is happy to be displaying his talents on a KTMMA showcase once more. “KTMMA is a brilliant format. I really enjoyed their rules when I fought last time out. As a show it is quickly turning into one of the best promotions in the country and has already had some of the top names in the country on it.” Like Jon, Reece is not one for making predictions but he does have a warning for the challenger- “the only prediction I will make is that win, lose or draw it will be the toughest fight he has ever been in!”

This promises to be one of the fights of the night come Saturday 14th of March when KTMMA 3 is live from the ILEC Conference Centre in Earls Court London.

KTMMA 3 Update: More matches confirmed for England versus China.

After highlighting some of the top quality match-ups lined up for KTMMA 3 we are pleased to announce more additions to the card that see the cream of England take on Chinas finest under both KTMMA and WLF Kickboxing rules. Under the KTMMA rules system Dan Vinni from the renowned Cobra Gym will make his second showing for KTMMA as a replacement for Galore Bofando against Chinas Nuerla Mulali, known for his striking ability. This is a tough bout for Vinni but in his favour he has a very rounded game, his victories coming equally by way of KO or submission, so if the fight goes into round 2 (the MMA round) he may find himself the favourite at that point..

BST Northampton and Icon BJJ fighter Jefferson George the shadow demon blaximus is a welcome addition to the KTMMA roster and a very strong athlete with a growing reputation. Known for his physical strength and durability, George will have to be at the top of his game as Wu Haotian, WLF China, is very experienced and has won 13 of his fights by way of submission, favouring the rear-naked choke. George can take heart from the fact that Haotian can be inconsistent and Jefferson is just the man to exploit any weaknesses in his opponents game.

There are also two new matches under WLF Kickboxing rules with Ben Hodge, whose stablemate from Lumpini Crawley Ruth Ashdown, is also on the card, facing Guo Xi chuang. Chuangs record reflects his fighting style as he is an all-action fighter who likes to stand and trade and really go for the win, making him exciting to watch but also leaving him open to the counter. An explosive stoppage victory over Kamel Mezatni at YOKKAO 9 in 2014 in two rounds highlighted Chuangs explosive kicking and willingness to take a shot to deliver his own punches and eventually wear his opponent down. Hodge has an impeccable pedigree however with an incredible junior fight record of 10 wins from 12 fights winning the English Champion and British Champion titles. Its form he has continued into his senior career as he is the current WPMF European Champion, UKMF English Champion and ISKA British Champion. Given the quality of the two fighters this has the potential to be a crowd-pleasing war.

Heavyweight prospect and powerhouse Aundre Groce joins stablemate Kerrith Bhella as a KTMMA debutant as he takes on Sanda heavyweight Champion Tang Fei. Both men are light on their feet for heavyweights and carry knockout power allied to excellent kicking ability so it would be no surprise if this heavyweight encounter failed to go the distance, the only question being which of these two big men will still be standing to acknowledge the win and the accolades?

KTMMA 3 promises to be the most exciting KTMMA International showcase yet, providing a rare opportunity to see such a number of Chinas finest fighters on one card in the UK. The show takes place on Saturday 14th of March at the ILEC Conference Centre in Earls Court London.

Josh Palmer: “We will try and finish the fight in the first round as before!”

Veteran Muay Thai specialist Josh Palmer is establishing himself as one of the star attractions with KTMMA as he faces his third International opponent at KTMMA 3, having successfully beaten a Dutchman and a Brazilian in his previous outings. Now as he prepares to take on a Chinese opponent Josh admits that he is flourishing under the KTMMA rules- “I think the KTMMA concept can be more entertaining than straight up MMA, especially if the crowd are not as knowledgeable in grappling. Myself and my trainers are working hard and looking forward to this next challenge.”

Against Dutchman Marvin Sansaar Palmer really emphasised his traditional Thai strengths and as a result was not really tested under the KTMMA rule set-“We knew that Marvin Sansaar was experienced in K1 /Dutch kickboxing, but not as much with elbows and clinch with full Thai rules, so we were going to use those weapons from the start. Also, we didn’t think he had much or any ground game or wrestling, so I was pretty confident if the fight went to the 2nd round, we would win. In the end it was an easy victory for us.”

His next WKMMA match-up was a totally different set-up, with Brazilian Joao Nogueira much more of a ground specialist and an obvious danger come the MMA round. Josh states, however, that he was well aware of this- “The 2nd fight with Joao was a much stronger test. He is very experienced in MMA so I knew I would have to be careful of submissions if it went to round 2. I worked with Gyp Tessier for the 1st round to push the pace and finish the fight. I dropped him twice if I remember, it did go to round 2 but Joao was so beaten up and tired he did not have the energy to do any damage. I had worked a lot being on the bottom position with Jude Samuel and Ash Grimshaw, so we were confident if the fight went to the ground, I could stay out of trouble.”

Now, at KTMMA 3, Josh faces a very dangerous opponent indeed in the form of ‘The Dongbei Tiger’ Guan Wang, who has 9 KO’S from his 14 wins and 3 submissions, suggesting a well-rounded fighter and a potential danger in both the rounds. Palmer likes to finish the KTMMA fights in the 1st round but with Wang’s first round knockout ratio also impressive and only the single loss on his record, this could not only prove a real test but also a truly exciting bout for the fans.

As to the future, Josh has fully embraced the KTMMA system and is ready for whatever challenge the organisation puts his way-“I have been training in MMA and Jiu -itsu since I left Thailand. Honestly, I am enjoying the style, even more so than Muay-Thai but I’m really just looking for a challenge and I’ll steer myself wherever I find that.”

Josh will be fighting Guan Wang at KTMMA 3 Saturday 14th of March at the ILEC Conference Centre in Earls Court London.

2ND ISKA world Title announced for KTMMA 3!

Hot on the heels of the announcement of Reece Rowell’s ISKA World Title defence on KTMMA 3 comes breaking news of a second World Title fight scheduled for the show, this time for the ISKA Ladies straw-weight title between England’s Ruqsana Begum from the KO Gym in London and Ludivine Lasnier from Paris, France over 3x3 minute rounds under ISKA K-1 rules.

Ruqsana, who carried the Olympic torch through Greenwich for the 2012 Olympics fights out of the prestigious KO gym under Bill Judd and is the British Muay Thai champion, having also won medals at European and World level, taking Gold at the European Championships in Latvia and bronze as team captain at the World championships in Russia.

Ruqsana faces stiff opposition, however, from French Full Contact A class Champ (2013) and European ISKA FC Champ (2014) Ludivine Lasnier, who has only 2 losses on her ten fight professional record. Ruqsana, a popular and inspirational figure in the local community, will be a hometown favourite and keen to deliver the title but France is a Kickboxing hotbed and Ludivine will not be crossing the water to lose, so this promises to be a no quarter asked or given confrontation not to be missed!

KTMMA 3 boasts a truly World Class International fight card and takes place at the ILEC Conference Centre in Earls Court London on Saturday 14th of March.

I can’t wait for my KTMMA debut to show the World what Kerrith Bhella is all about!

Firewalker Gym’s Kerrith Bhella is an exciting addition to the KTMMA 3 fight card as he takes on Hu Yafei from China, an explosive Sanda exponent with a very aggressive style, under WLF rules. As he has shown on numerous occasions however, our own UK K-1 champion thrives on a challenge and is more than equipped to deal with the pressure of fighting International opposition on the big occasion, having recently scored a significant victory in Japan. “I've fought international opponents a number of times now, so I’m use to the build-up and atmosphere. Japan was an amazing experience and I learned that as long as your head’s in the right place and you put the training and hard work in it doesn’t matter who or where you fight, you will perform.”

Yafei has a reputation for being a front foot fighter and very durable as he showed in his recent victory over the Dutchman Marcel Verhaar late last year but Kerrith points out that the qualities attributed to his Chinese opponent are qualities that he also possesses. “I’m also tough and durable, so that is of no concern to me. I’m approaching the fight as a martial artist putting in the karma for an epic performance. I believe my power, speed and movement will be too much for my opponent to deal with.” He also points out that although this is a big international bout it does not change his thinking as he treats every fight with equal importance, pointing out that “whether it’s international or domestic, the buzz is always the same, nothing compares to the buzz of a fight!”

Kerrith is enthusiastic about the KTMMA concept, as he sees it as a great way of bringing stand-up fighting fans and MMA fans together whilst also giving fighters from all different martial arts a chance to showcase their skills. That said, he is in no hurry to transition to full KTMMA rules the way fellow stand-up star Josh Palmer has, pointing out that “I've not done any form of ground work so it would be completely new form to me but I never say never.” He is totally focussed on the show, however and is more than happy with the way his fight camp is progressing. “Training is going really well, I feel fit, strong and ready. I’m looking forward to starting the year off with a boom. KTMMA 3 looks like it’s going to be an amazing show and I can’t wait for my debut, to show the world what Kerrith Bhella is all about. I guarantee a memorable performance!”

Kerrith is in action on Saturday 14th of March as part of KTMMA 3, live from the ILEC Conference Centre in Earls Court London.

Ruth Ashdown: Gong Yan Li may be the KO Queen but she’s never been hit by me before!

KTMMA 3 has a stacked card of top-class England versus China bouts but one that stands out to be a potential fight of the night is the match made under WLF rules over 3x3 minutes between Lumpini Crawley’s Ruth Ashdown and China’s Gong Yan Li. Li is a Chinese superstar, the Chinese and Asian Sanda Champion with a record of 24-1earning her the nickname ‘The KO Queen’. For her part Ashdown also has an impeccable pedigree, as she is the ISKA and WBC World Muaythai Champion and has experience of Chinese opponents. “I have been lucky enough to have the opportunity to fight in China, twice, beautiful Country and people. The fights I had out there were tough, as it's their way of life, what they do from school. Over here we have to work full time, and train. I look forward to them visiting our home town and seeing the way we do it. It will be a spectacular show and an incredible fight, I know I've trained hard and I'm ready!”

With international bouts it’s often the case that little beyond a formal record is known about an opponent but this is not something that phases Ruth- “It's been nice to see her face on the poster but I try not to look into them too much. Every fighter will fight each opponent differently depending on their strengths. I've learnt to expect nothing and be ready for anything!” To this end Ruth treats International bouts exactly the same way she would a domestic fight but not more so, as she sees every match as an honour. “I love fighting, this is my life and my passion. I feel honoured with every fight I am offered, although I cannot wait for this challenge on such a great show with this large federation. It’s going to be big! I'm well known for my walk outs and getting the crowd going!”

The crowd may get going for another reason and that’s because this bout has the potential to be explosive and the thought that it could emerge as fight of the night really excites Ruth. “I'd love it to be the fight of the night!! My preparation is hard but this is what I love. I will be more than ready on the night. She might be the KO Queen but she's never been hit by me before!” As previously mentioned, the fight has really captured the imagination and Ruth can’t wait to make her KTMMA debut on such a prestigious card-“I've read a bit about KTMMA and seen how amazing the shows are but never been lucky enough to see one live. I can't wait and feel honoured to be a part of it now.”

Saturday 14th of March is when Ruth takes on the Chinese KO Queen Gong Yan Li as part of KTMMA 3, live from the ILEC Conference Centre in Earls Court London.

Ruqsana Begum: “I train hard, fight harder and leave the rest up to god!”

Ruqsana Begum is a multi-talented role-model for modern women. Coming from a traditional Muslim Bangledeshi background, she took up Thai/Kickboxing aged 18 whilst studying for her BA in Architectural Technology. She studied in secret as she was afraid to tell her family, who might not approve of such a demanding and male dominated sport coming from a traditional Muslim Bangladeshi background. Ruqsana broke down stereo types and cultural boundaries in order to train and flourished within her chosen sport, fighting out of the prestigious KO gym under Bill Judd and gaining a bronze medal in the Amateur World championships, Gold in the European and becoming the British atom weight Muay Thai champion.

Now Ruqsana faces the ultimate challenge, an ISKA World title fight at KTMMA 3 against Ludivine Lasnier from Paris, France, the French Full Contact A class Champ and European ISKA FC Champion over 3x3 minute rounds under ISKA K-1 rules. Ruqsana’s training is going well, she feels strong at 50.5k and is not worried by the prospect of facing her French opponent. “I'm not worried, I'm use to fighting other national champions at the IFMA World championships. To me it doesn't matter who the opponent is, rather how I perform in the ring. A challenge is always good brings the best out of me.”

As a continuation of that positive mind-set, Ruqsana is not the sort of fighter that needs to analyse her opponents or find out every detail about them and she has a very pragmatic viewpoint as to why she thinks this way. “I actually don't concern myself. A fight is a fight that's how I see it. I don't research them (opponents) to be honest.” She is excited, however about the prospect of fighting on a KTMMA showcase, “It's a new initiative concept that I'm proud to be part of” and taking on International opposition on such a big stage. “I have everything to gain. I love fighting on the world stage as it gives me a chance to test myself.”

Ruqsana is the type of fighter that likes to drill and train a game-plan but is not slavishly bound by it, stating that she follows her instincts once in the ring and feels that at this stage in her career the World title represents unfinished business-“I feel proud that I have come this far but don't want to retire pre-maturely. I have worked hard and want to reach my true potential.” To this end she is grateful for all that have supported her, especially her sponsors-“for joining me in my journey and making the difference in my life. Welcome to my new sponsors and DCD Grou who have supported from my early days. I'm humble to have this opportunity and hopefully I will win the world title for my country.”

Ruqsana fights for the World title at KTMMA 3 which takes place at the ILEC Conference Centre in Earls Court London on Saturday 14th of March.

Dean Garnett: “I will dominate the Kickboxing round before stopping Yao in the second MMA round with aggressive ground strikes or a submission.”

26 year old Cage Warriors veteran Dean Garnett has an unblemished 7-0 MMA record with 5 wins coming inside the distance by way of submission stoppage but now Dean faces his biggest test yet as he faces Chinese star Yao Honggang at KTMMA 3 under KTMMA rules. It’s a new format for Dean, as he makes his debut, but one he is looking forward to. “I think the format’s amazing for the fans, as fighters won't have to worry too much about pacing themselves, which should lead to some pretty exciting bouts. I've wanted to fight kickboxing for some time to gain more experience in the striking aspects of MMA and I'm particularly excited about the introduction of the MMA rule set which was used in Pride.”

Dean’s training camp has been good and visiting family in Australia has given him the opportunity to get some top-class sparring in. “The trainings been great, I've been visiting family and friends in Australia, so I’ve spent a lot of time training with guys out there. I’ve had the chance to spar with UFC veterans, Muaythai champions and other talented Aussie fighters. I'm back home and sharpening things up and finalising prep with my team before the trip to London next week.” He’s also looking forward to what is effectively his first big International bout but is not phased at facing Honggang despite his opponent being very experienced and nicknamed ‘The Master’. “I've had a good look at Yao, I think he's pretty decent and brings a lot of experience. However, I think my striking is better and my use of wrestling in MMA, despite his wrestling pedigree. I do have a few tricks I've been working on but I'm looking forward to enjoying the unusual format of the show and enjoying myself.”

Dean’s unbeaten record faces a stern test but the fighter himself does not feel the pressure an unbeaten run often brings with it. “I don't think being unbeaten makes a difference, it's all about the level of opponents you face, so I look forward to fighting Yao and will be confident in my abilities and preparation regardless.” Preparation for Dean regularly includes a specific game-plan but his approach for KTMMA has been slightly different this time around. “I do believe in game plans and usually try to implement a specific approach but I'm going to be a little less rigid for these bouts and enjoy the experience fighting under different rule-sets.”

Confidence is not something Dean is short of, and rightly so given his record but he is also known for his fight predictions and is equally happy making a prediction when it comes to his KTMMA debut-“I've predicted both my last two bouts correctly and I'm not looking to stop now. I believe I will dominate the Kickboxing round before stopping Yao in the second MMA round with aggressive ground strikes or a submission.”

Liam Wells: “I love the feeling I am representing my country as well as my supporters and I promise to do them proud.”

He may only be 20 years of age but Falcon Kickboxing’s Liam Wells is mature beyond his years, explosive in style yet technical and assured, he is already making waves amongst his peers, translating Junior into Adult titles with seemingly consummate ease and having seasoned veterans talk of him as ‘the complete package’. Well now Liam faces his toughest test to date at KTMMA 3 when he faces the Chinese star Wang Pengfei over 3 x 3 minute rounds of WLF Kickboxing. Despite his seemingly tender years Liam’s team at Falcon ensure that he is already totally professional in his attitude and preparation and he feels more than ready for this big International bout. “I have been focussing more on Muay-Thai style technique and working with regular K1 rules fighters again, and also have been pushed to the maximum by my team mates and trainers.”

Liam has already experienced International competition and is no stranger to the intense atmosphere International competition brings with it and he has learnt from the experience stating that “I have learnt to embrace the atmosphere rather than let it affect me in a negative way. Although I know I will be nervous these are the nights that get me really motivated to put on a good performance.” With this in mind, Liam jumped at the opportunity to make his KTMMA debut against International opposition. “After speaking to my trainers Matt and Paul, I was never going to turn down the opportunity to fight a Chinese opponent and especially on a show like KTMMA. I love the feeling I am representing my country as well as my supporters and I promise to do them proud.”

Given the fact that his opponent is from China, very little is known about Pengfei compared to other fighters that Liam has fought but it is nothing that the team dwells on and Liam’s answer once again emphasises his maturity. “We have talked about a couple of game plans so we are never set to only fight one way and sometimes you plan for someone you have seen footage on and they fight differently - I know that has been the case when people have fought me as well.” The bout will be under a rules system that Liam will have little trouble adapting to but given his youth, full KTMMA rules are something he could easily adapt to in the future, if he wished to, something that is not lost on the Falcon fighter. “Never say never. I love my kickboxing right now and I am always learning, and I have a lot of goals I want to achieve, but I would never rule anything out.”

So, he may not be thinking of transitioning to KTMMA rules himself yet but Liam is sold on the KTMMA concept stating that “it makes sure the experienced ground fighter must have a good stand up game to last the first part of the fight, so this really is a test of all of a fighters skills. Although regular MMA mixes stand up and ground, this makes the fighters test their stand-up for a prolonged amount of time. So I am looking forward to being a spectator after my fight.”

As to his own bout on the card Liam is not one for making public predictions but he is willing to share his thoughts on what we can expect from his KTMMA debut-“I am definitely looking to leave a big impression. I am grateful to be given a stage like this and I want to make the most of it and want people to remember my fight after Saturday night.”

Liam is making his KTMMA debut on Saturday 14th of March as part of KTMMA 3, live from the ILEC Conference Centre in Earls Court London.

Jefferson George: “Whatever he’s got I’ll have a defence for it.”

One of the most intriguing match-ups when China takes on England at KTMMA 3 is the KTMMA rules bout between the experienced submission specialist Wu Haotian and our own Jefferson George from BST Northampton, known as a well-rounded powerhouse, nicknamed the ‘shadow demon blaximus’. On paper the first round favours George, the second Haotian but anyone who has seen Jefferson perform will know that neither round holds fear for him and that Haotian might have to be just as wary of George’s BJJ skills as the English fighter will have to be of his speciality rear-naked choke.

When interviewed there is a quiet, assured, business-like confidence about Jefferson that inspires equal confidence in him. When asked about the KTMMA concept Jefferson states that he loves the fact that KTMMA is a showcase for a fighters skills, the two rounds forcing the combatants to highlight different aspects of their arsenal and to this end he feels more than comfortable in either round, pointing out that you are just breaking down your skill set for the public. As a result he is more than happy to stand and trade, in fact he is looking forward to the opportunity in the opening round and putting on a show for the public. That said, when it comes to the ground game, Jefferson is equally proficient with his BJJ skills, making him a formidable adversary.

Jefferson’s opponent is a , experienced submission specialist with 13 big wins coming by way of rear naked choke, a seeming speciality but when presented with these facts Jefferson is unworried and in his quiet matter-of –fact manner states that he has no intention of changing his game plan to accommodate these statistics-“I‘ve done my striking, I’ve done my BJJ, I’m just going out there to perform and get the win.” When pushed on the subject, Jefferson expands pointing out that a person’s speciality is only as effective as the fighter in front of him allows it to be-“his record doesn’t worry me. Whatever (submission) he brings I will have a defence for it, it’s all about the person in front of him.”

That said, Jefferson is also conscious of the fact that the first round is stand-up only and when it is pointed out to him that the round might favour him he does acknowledge with a gentle laugh that if the opportunity arises he will take it-“Obviously I want to put on a good show (for the fans) but if there’s a chance to knock him out, I’ll take it.” Most fighters admit that they want to put on a performance for the audience, especially in a big International bout where it’s perceived as ‘us’ versus China but Jefferson also has the pragmatic nature of the professional fighter-“I think about that but it’s just me in the ring and I’ve got to do what I’ve got to do.” With that same professionalism, Jefferson is not one for making brash predictions and it is with genuine modesty that he quietly, yet confidently states to close the interview-“I’m going to turn up, perform and shock everyone.”

This really could be a case of the unstoppable force meeting the immovable object and it takes place at KTMMA 3, Saturday 14th of March at the ILEC Conference Centre in Earls Court London.

Ben Hodge: “I’ll win and I’ll look good doing it!”

One of the most explosive match-ups on the KTMMA 3 card has to be the England versus China meeting of our very own Ben Hodge from Lumpini Crawley and Guo Xi Chuang under WLF rules. Chuang is an all-action fighter who likes to stand and trade and really go for the win but he has certainly net his match in Hodge, the current WPMF European Champion, UKMF English Champion and ISKA British Champion, hinting at a potentially crowd-pleasing but short war.

Hodge is confident that he has what it takes to secure the win and states that he has had a great training camp and feels fit, strong and ready for war. There is always that level of extra pressure when a fighter is representing his country but Ben sees this as a positive rather than a negative-“I thrive on pressure! There is definitely a sense of national pride though, I will always do myself, my gym and my country proud.” When discussing Xi Chuang’s style, Ben is certainly not intimidated by his opponent’s reputation as an all action fighter who likes to pressure his opponents. In fact, you get the impression that Ben is looking forward to Chuang coming at him and will not change his strategy to adapt to the man in front of him –“No change in strategy at all. I've lost count of how many "front foot" or "come forward" fighters I've beaten, stopped or knocked out. He best come with more of a strategy than just marching forward throwing heavy shots, cos he's going to walk on to a lot!”

Ben is making his KTMMA debut and is confident of the show’s ongoing success believing that it is a great concept, different in its appeal and because of that he can see it becoming a lot bigger. He is matched under WLF rules but when quizzed if he will possibly transition to full KTMMA rules the way fellow Muay Thai specialist Josh Palmer has he says never say never as he is a born fighter who is always looking for a challenge. As to the challenge that a challenge that Guo Xi Chuang provides Ben is very confident that there will be only one outcome on Saturday night-“I'll win, and I'll look good doing it.”

This explosive WLF bout takes place on KTMMA 3, Saturday 14th of March at the ILEC Conference Centre in Earls Court London.

Dean Garnett; “The atmosphere was intense from the first to last bout!”

Prior to his KTMMA debut on KTMMA 3 at the ILEC Conference Centre in Earls Court London, Dean Garnett, fresh from two correct predictions, made the bold statement that he would stop his Chinese opponent Yao Honggang in the second round of his big international bout but in prediction terms it didn’t prove third time lucky, as Dean actually stopped his man in the opening round. Needless to say, Dean saw it as the perfect way to introduce himself to the KTMMA fans-“As far as a debut goes it couldn't have went much better for me, the show itself was well ran and organised, we were well looked after and to top it off I landed my first KO!”

Dean appreciated the special KTMMA atmosphere, noting that the crowd were knowledgeable and well-educated, staying for all the bouts not just the fighter they were supporting and this, he believes, ensured that the atmosphere was intense from the first to last bout, a good thing for him as he was second last on the card but his performance was well worth waiting for. As previously mentioned, Dean had predicted a second round stoppage but events didn’t quite go to plan. “I didn't expect to get the KO in the first, I was planning to take my time and go for the finish in the MMA round but I attempted a flying knee I'd been working on and I knew if I was short with that, the big right hand was always there!”

The ‘big right hand’ certainly worked and even before the bout Dean and his team felt confident that the fight was very much there for the taking, noting that Honggang’s hands weren't as tight as they could be defensively. As a result Dean’s coaches wanted him to pressure the Chinese fighter and let his hands go once Honggang was moving backwards. “During the fight he frustrated me by catching my kicks, which was causing disruptions to the flow of the bout…maybe that got me a little bit angry and made me add a bit more venom to that right hand!” That venom came in 3.08 of the opening round and not only secured an impressive victory but sparked a realisation in Dean himself-“I'll definitely be hoping to be part of the next event, it's really opened my eyes to how much I enjoy competing in the striking elements of MMA.”

As to the future, Dean would obviously return to KTMMA if the opportunity arose and given his success in the upright KTMMA round would look to pursue another K1 bout on the back of this fight before getting back to his Pro- MMA roots.

Reece Rowell: “The knockout was perfect!”

Whilst KTMMA 3 featured and incredible England versus China line-up it also played host to a highly anticipated domestic battle as Reece Rowell defended his ISKA World title against veteran professional Jon Durrant. The Cobra Gym fighter has achieved a great deal across his career and was looking to add the World title to his impressive collection of belts but the young champion from Aveley is rapidly earning a big reputation as an explosive talent, so the KTMMA stage was set for an epic encounter between two of England’s finest.

This was no grudge match either, as both men displayed a huge amount of mutual respect in the pre-fight build-up but that said, it did not prevent the fight having a spectacular knockout finish, a showreel right hand from the defending champion in round two that saw the challenger’s dreams shattered in devastating fashion. For Rowell, it was the perfect end to a hard training camp and proved a memorable experience for a variety of reasons. “The atmosphere of the show was incredible. We both sold lots of tickets and had big support there. It was one of the best shows I have ever been to. I was very focused on the day and was confident that all my hard training was going to pay off.”

That confidence proved well –founded although, as previously mentioned, both champion and challenger held each other in high regard but despite that Reece felt he had the tools to get the job done-“I knew it was going to be a very hard fight but I also knew that I had the power to finish the fight with a clean punch or kick.” Reece noted that in the first round Jon was moving around to his right a lot, away from Reece’s back leg, so in the second his seasoned and knowledgeable corner, headed by Steve Kerridge, told him to cut Jon off and force him the other way on to Reece’s back leg and right hand. The result was the spectacular finish that everyone is talking about. “It worked perfectly. The knockout was perfect. As soon as it landed I knew he was not going to get up.”

It was a dream defence for the World Champion against a creditable opponent and a man Reece still has a lot of respect for. “As I have said before, Jon is a fighter I have massive respect for and is a credit to the sport.” With his belt spectacularly defended Reece can’t wait to return to the KTMMA ring as he has thoroughly enjoyed his matches with the promotion and believes that the brand’s shows are getting bigger and better each and every time. Before that however, he steps up a weight class to 77k on May 16th as he fights the European champion at that weight for the chance of a second World title and “hopefully put out another big statement and see where that leads me.” Given his current knockout form that second belt is more than a distinct possibility.

All at KTMMA wish Reece the best of luck on the 16th and hope that he brings back that second ISKA World title.

Ben Hodge: “I would welcome another fight offer from KTMMA.”

On a stacked card, as England took on China at KTMMA 3, Ben Hodge proved his pedigree with a unanimous points win over the very tough and highly rated Guo Xi Chuang, a fighter known for his all-action style. Prior to the bout Ben felt that Chuang’s style would suit him and so it proved, with Hodge in dominant mood. In the first Ben was determined to make Chuang aware that he wasn’t the only one that carried power and immediately put his opponent on the back foot and it became clear to Ben that the Chinese fighter fid not want to take too many of his trademark big kicks. It seemed that the Chinese corner realised that their man had lost the first because he came out more determined in the second, as Ben puts it- “he seemed to have had a bit of a telling off in the corner, so came out trying to throw haymakers but as predicted he walked on to big kicks and knees.”

As a result when it came to round three it was obvious that Chuang needed a knockout and Ben and his corner were ready for some desperate all-out tactics from his opponent to ensure that there was no turnaround in fortune-“I used my footwork more, timed my shots and although I may have got caught with a couple I still took the round.” Ben not only took the round but the unanimous decision although he respected the power of the man in front of him-“He was strong, and had power in his punches, I could tell when I took them on my arms.” The difference between the two however, was the fact that Chuang “didn't seem to know what to do with my kicks, how to avoid them or counter from them” and because of this Ben “never felt in trouble. I was always confident of winning, before and during. I'm a smart fighter, I always use my brain. His style was all brawn, no brains, and a smart fighter will always pick apart someone like that, and I feel that's what I did.”

Ben was impressed with both the professionalism and atmosphere of the night and would certainly return to the KTMMA arena-“I loved the show, the promotion, and the fights were great. Again, very professional and I would welcome another fight offer from KTMMA.” As to the future, well short-term that question may have been answered on the night itself-“Well, on my way out of the ring, I was asked to fight in a 4-man tournament in Milan in April. There are a few details to be ironed out but I'm sure I'll be there.”

Ryan Edmundson: “I was looking for a finish from the bell!”

The stacked KTMMA 3 card was not just about the prestigious England versus China bouts as there were some incredible domestic match-ups featured too, including an ISKA World title fight and the opening bout of the evening which saw the Bear Pit’s Ryan Edmundson take on Double K gyms Fredricko Remy, both men known as dangerous strikers. Edmundson exploded onto the scene as a teenager and quickly earned a reputation as a devastating finisher but he will be the first to admit that his recent form has been inconsistent. Well, the ‘Bodysnatcher’ was in a ‘take no prisoners’ mood at KTMMA 3 and stunned the crowd with a stoppage finish in under two minutes of the opening round.

Edmundson knew that KTMMA was the perfect stage to make a statement of renewed intent and was grateful of the opportunity-“I was very impressed by the show, I couldn't quite believe where I was and it still feels like a dream representing my little gym from Bristol on such a professional stage.” Ryan certainly didn’t prove overawed by the occasion and this he puts down to his preparation for the fight, which was intense. “I have been getting hammered by my trainers Mike James and Mike Belgrave for weeks in preparation at the bearpit, working on new ways of fighting and finally adapting to the K-1 style of striking and as a result I was looking for a finish from the bell.”

Ryan wasn’t the only one, as Fredricko also came straight out firing on all cylinders, giving the fans an absolute war to start the show. It was just under two minutes of frantic action with both men looking for the big stoppage and exchanging hurtful techniques consistently. “I knew my opponent was an extremely good fighter and a worthy champion and I had the utmost respect for him and his gym, so I had to close him down quickly and let my hands go and at some point I knew I was going to catch him clean.”

The victory is seen by Ryan as a fresh start to his career, notably at the new weight of 68kg and he credits his fiancée Claire with his ability to reach and stay at the weight, a prospect that fills him with confidence for the future. “I feel this is where I belong and where my career can start. As for any future plans I will continue to build up our gym, listen to my trainers and leave my upsetting past experiences behind me. I am ready to tackle the future one small step at a time and keep smiling the whole way from now on. The body snatcher is back!”
