Go the Highlander!!

Please anyone that can, please support this show. NZ ladies kickboxing needs this event to put us back on the map. So far Highlander has some of the best female fighters in NZ who will put on a fantastic display and deserve the support.

Scotty, hope there will be a video cause I'm on the other side of the world at the time and I have to see this!

Remember
This is NOT a K-1 Tournament,
it is a 8 Woman Elimination Tournament being run in a similar fashon to a K-1 Type Format.
Hopefully it will be the first of many 8 woman touraments to follow so im looking for an awesome branding name for future events.
Come on ladies!!!
What would you like your tournament to be called???

There is a MMA promotion (hook n shoot) was recently asking people for ideas for naming their next event, which has mostly female fighters on it. They came up with Gladiatrix...which evidently is the femanine version of "Gladiator". That's what they said, atleast.
Brian Ritchie
Posted: 2004-05-27 22:49:30
Maidens of Madness?

I dunno...most event names sound cheesy to me.

You could just come up with a non-gender specific "brand" name and then title your individual events with clever descriptive headings. That is what hook n Shoot did. Their first "All Female" MMA event was called "Hook-n-Shoot : Revolution". It worked.
Karen Lynch
Posted: 2004-05-27 22:54:19
"Gladiatrix".....that's far too close to Dominatrix for me.

Hey Highlander; I was chatting to Lance Searancke a few weeks ago and he volunteered his services as a Ring Boy, so you might want to get onto him about it: he was pretty keen!

This will be an awesome tourny, the quality of women's kickboxing is surpassing the men's in alot of fights!

Highlander,
I would be very interested in fighting in this tournament.

I have had 5 wins of fights, 2 by TKO. I train under Laura Skinner In QLD Australia and trained under Holly Ferneley all last year in Sydney. I fight between 53 and 56kg.

All this sounds so exciting - I'm pissed I'm missing it!

Scotty, good competition for our girls would make for a very exciting night!!!

Karen, doesn't she train (or used to) under Sue? Youngster, in the early 50's weight wise I think. She was at the Nationals a year ago and did quite well, and has had a couple of fights since then, recently fighting Ngaps. That's if I'm thinking of the same girl.

Yeah I think thats the same girl that fought Ngaps in Napier a few months back!
Good skills and hard! Ngaps beat her on points! Pregant but not knowing ha ha
No wonder she could lose weight in the sauna!

Was it a Elimination Type Format Tournament similar to Male K-1 Tournaments or were they just one off Womans Fights,
There has been other promoters done one of fights but what i would like to know is if anyone has done a K-1 type format 8 woman event Before???

The Show /s i was refferring to was Just All Womens Thai-Boxing Fights in 1 Night !
Yours i think Might be Unique ! the First ! :-))
Good Luck with it !
But isnt it More `Thai` than Kick? Fighters Event?
Why dont you just Add the word
Thai to /in your Title ??
The Highlander
Posted: 2004-06-01 01:29:44
Sandy
The Male title Fights are more Thai Boxing Than Kickboxing, Hence the Wmc Titles,
But the Womans WKB-1 Event is more Kickboxing than Thai Thai Boxing.

When you originally tried to post it, you had it in Excel format. I converted it to JPEG for you. See if you can find an image editing program then try to save it out to JPEG with a pixel height and width no bigger than 600 pixels for either.

Whoever is creating the poster should be able to provide a JPEG version for you to upload. If they can't then send me the file first and I'll conver it and post it for you.

While I admire his charisma, I don't agree with everything that Sandy suggested.

If your show is not TV-ready, then wait for the second or third show. Get it ready for TV. If you go to the TV guys too early and they are disappointed in the show or the turnout, then they won't consider your show again. This has been the case with MANY promoters who have tried to break deals with TV producers about having their fights air. If your show DOES turn out well, then you have a good example to show them.

I've read a lot of interviews by fight promoters and I've paid close attention to any articles or threads written about promoting. Promoting seems like a complex "art" to me. If you over-market your show, that could turn out being worse instead of better in the long run. Television should be the bright light at the end of the tunnel. I think it is better to build up your events to the point where it is ready to burst onto the TV scene. First impressions are a big deal. People are stupid like that.

History has proven how difficult it is for a niche sporting promoter to try to get airtime on Television. Perhaps thigs are different in New Zealand, or in the UK...I dunno, but in the states, it is complicated.
The Highlander

Yep your right brian
Iv'e been trying to get T.V.
But they are not quite sure yet as they have never seen Women kickboxing here in NZ, So they are not quite convinced it is a draw card yet. Although they hav'ent quite said NO yet i think i might just give them a miss.
Shame co's they are going to missout on a show that would give great TV ratings, expesially only 2 weeks after showing the K-1 NZ on Tv. Every woman in the country would tune into this event if tv advertised it properlly which they have the abbility to do.

Dont try to get TV for show if some of the fighters are wearing headgear-that will kill it deader than a hammer. The specttors like to be wable to see a face and identify the contestants. plus headgear to a layman seems to be suggesting the fighters are not ready for prime time...

You cant even get womens amateur boxing on tv for that very reason(headgear)-but they do put pro womens boxing on regularly...

Nobody will be wearing headgear on this show
dan
Posted: 2004-06-21 03:24:03
Then, by all means, do try and Televise it!! Try and get a really professional announcer. that makes sooo much difference on TV. ie, wearing a tux, and looking like a first class production.

best of luck, it could be a history making show for womens K-1

Seriously if there is anything we can do to help I'm sure we'd all be into it.

Well only one week to go & now the drama's have started.

Amy Birch from Australia has pulledout!!!
Have been trying to get hold of her for over a week, She hase'nt returned my calls which i left on her cell ph. email, text, and even the guy she lives with i left a message for her to ring urgently. Finnaly i got hold of the trainer she said was comming over with her and he tells me she is'int one of his students, that she had asked if she could train at his gym to get ready for this fight & i if he would like to come with her, He said yes and then for the next 5weeks he has'ent heard from her, she hase'nt turned up for training he had organised with her, she has not returned his calls so he gave up on her, she hadent turned up foe even one training session in 6wks.
In the meantime i had booked & paid for her & trainers airfair which are non refundable. Now she text me and said she has to pull out as she has tonsilitis.
Acording to other trainers in Australia that i have spoken to over the weekend say this is typical of Amy Birch she has done ths before on several occasions where she has just not turned up and promoters could not get hold of her.

So Amy if you read this post Thanks a fucken lot for nothin. You will never fight on one of my promotions again and i hope no other promoter takes you on there show. Call yourself a world champion??? World champion my fucken arse!!! World champions are more proffessional than that.

We as promoters know there is allways going to be drama's but atleast you could have called personally and told me earlier. Not just text me 1wk before.
After all it was you that contacted me and asked!!!Please can i fight on your show.

Well i have a reserve who is going to fight in your place!!!
Clair Saxton!!!A REAL FIGHTER

That's pretty bad, I am not sure what's up with her. She came to Boonchu and was keen, but then she was gone. There are some flakes out there. No worries for us cause we are at the same weight and maybe one day we can fight.

Hey Highlander,
Yeh I saw Mark not long ago and he said you had spoken to him. But I'm unavailable for a while. Or maybe longer due to contract commitments, risk of being injured in sports etc... But I like to keep informed with what's going on in the sport and hopefully be involved in it more, even if I'm not able to fight. Should be back in Brisbane within the next year and will be in Melbourne during the next 10 months. So will probably still do some training. But career is more important to me.

I'm sure the show will go great. I look forward to hearing who wins it.
Julie :-)

That really sucks Scotty, good on you for publishing her name so others can be warned. I know Mark Baily has started training some of my old fighters in Wanganui. If a name Andrew Phillips pops up "look out promoters" as he did the same thing when I was training him. He stopped training after that as I refused to give his name to promoters.

Good luck with the show, go New Zealand.

Julie Wood will win for sure or should that be Fore Shore! (Kiwi joke for you out of towners}
Shes never been hitting harder, moving smarter or been more determined and has an incredibly wise, informed, good looking, modest trainer who, like the promoter, has some Scottish ancestry...oh and some Irish... so half of him wants to get drunk and the other half doesnt want to pay.
Looking forward to the weekend Scotty...but we have to find someone to buy the beers! Especially if that Ahipene fella is going to be there.
Oh... you had better ring the pubs to get more beer into Taupo if the Pissketeers are going to be in town!
Did I mention I was good looking.... ,

Sorry Guys, my last post was a little misleading and not quite representative of the truth. Whilst I am modest etc I must admit that Julie is not training well and has had a few set backs in the run up to this fight.
Her sparring partner Karen, a former Lightweight World Champion of Amputee Backgammon I believe, recently jumped up whilst sparring and kicked Julie with her one and only leg,in the head( right on the steel plate} this sent Julie reeling into the corner and caused Julie to bang into Steve Donaldson. Steve was cleaning his AK47, getting ready for the Queen St peace march and Julie took the front sight right in the left eye... her good eye since the laser surgery went wrong.
The compound fracture of the left fibia, which Julie endured last week has not quite healed and was also aggrevated when Julies other sparring partner's seeing eye dog somehow jumped in the ring and bit Julie right where the bone protudes. We are not sure whether the Tetanus was contracted through the bite or the nasty incident last week with the Bulgarian peanut-picker outside the Adult novelty shop. Nevertheless, the 'lockjaw' was well received by us at SMAC as we didnt have to listen to " how hard my sparring partners are" from you know who.
Apart from all this, we know that anything can happen on the nightand there is a lot of up and coming talent around. In saying that, I am a little worried because of all the good luck we have been having lately. Something has to go wrong sooner or later. I only hope that our luck holds out!!!

What a night - massive massive ups to Scotty for putting on such a fantasic and awesome event - an amazing night and exciting sign of things to come for woman in the sport - congrats to the ladies who fought some brilliant and hard fought battles with all their heart, spirit and fighting power - I dare anyone after last night to even make comment that woman shouldn't be in the ring - the should, they are and they will continue to make their mark on combat sport.

I've just got back from Taupo and the images are awesome - will get them sorted and post up a couple here later today and have them all on on my website www.theimagegirl.co.nz to view and purchase hopefully by this time tomorrow. so make sure you check them out and support these ladies of our sport -

Well done ofcourse also to the blokes on the night - some great battles there also -

It was a really good show. I don't think i've ever enjoyed a fight as much as my one last night. Thanks and all credit to Richard, he was the better man on the night and deserved the decision, It was a good learning experience, and although im dissapointed I lost, I feel I gained a lot out of it.

Gordon Pye was on fire against Hemuera Maika last night deivering punishing hand combinations, dropping him a number of times before the ref stopped it in the 5th.

Sydney Asiata looked deadly against Kerry with beautiful straight lefts, proud of you brother, your on the up and up.

Of the womens fights I saw they were awesome, unfortunatly some were a bit lop sided experience wise, but that's how it goes. Congratulations Karen, you were on form.

Karen lynch Ko'd all 3 opponents in the 1st round.
Sarah Clunie in 30seconds
Shari Ranger in 2min 30seconds
Julie Wood in 2min.

Sorry about the mistakes above Karen i was half asleep when i posted them

AndyC - How can you tell they are screen resolution images ? Also not that I really care as I am with Rex interms of who ever takes the best shots gets the dollars but, the Alpha pics seemed to only be from one angle and featured predomiantly punching ... just an observation, Paul Cvaka is still the man in my eyes, best shots I have ever seen in the sport in Australasia.

I've just had another look at the Alpha shots - I do think that John has captured the momenet well in a number of shots which is the hardest thing to do as a sports photographer. Caitlins shots are a wider variety and tell more of the story of the event as opposed to being only action shots which is also great ... so positives on both sides, its better to have two photograpthers than none at all! At least now we have a choice, a couple of years back we had no one.

are but mike if you look at johns pics he wasnt alway ringside, he has taken them from over the top of the ring maybe from a balcony (wasnt there dont know)
in a few of the pics
the ones he took ringside look better to the ones he has taken from that other angle
i dont know how long john has been taken photos of fighters for but he looks to have got a few good pics in there (yes i know im no pro at it)
but give him time to get used to taken action pics & i would dare say you will see some great photos comming from john
also would like to add that when it comes to getting great pics it dosent happpen over night or drinking a lot of beer (hehe) i have given my diggy cam to a few fighters & x fighters after them saying how hard can it be
& when we looked at there photos they took most of there pics had no action in them what so ever
well done john cant wait to see what you take next

as for haven two ppl at a show taken pics theres nothing wrong with that, theres a guy here in qld that takes photos at the shows & we end up just tryen to show off to each other seeing who got the best pics of each round turns out to be great fun see who got that shot
i just wish he would let me win a round LOL

Hi all,

when I posted a link to a small selection of images I shot at Taupo I didn't realise the effect it was going to have!

I've been a full time media/sports photographer for nearly 15 years, I enjoy shooting a variety of sport, kickboxing being one of many! The gallery I posted was a small selection, mainly of Hawkes Bay fighters because I was making them available to the local paper (they used a pic of Leighann on page one).

Yes, most of the posted pics where shot from a balcony, for several reasons, one I was transmitting images from a laptop between fights (trying for space in the Sunday papers), because I shoot for mainly media (and not the fighters) I tend to shoot bold faces...papers like faces..expressions make pics!! and finally, there were already several photogs shooting the ropes, and because I wasn't there to shoot it as a commercial event I'd rather give them the space!!

It has been an interesting exercise watching the posts....thanks for the great comments! I agree that any sport has to support its core people, image girl obviously shoots a lot of the events for you guys..and does a good job...I was a little embarrassed to see the comparison being made between our work, we are doing two very different jobs..her pics are for the promoter and the fighters and mine are for media use....different markets equals different styles!!

It was great to see so many photogs at the event, there was even a polytech student doing a project on the sport...the more coverage the sport gets the better! The more welcoming the environment at these events the more likely you are to attract media, not trying to tell you guys (promoters) how to suck eggs, but my door (email or phone) is always open if you want/need anything media related!!

I look forward to the next kickboxing event, hopefully I can help generate more media coverage of a great, action packed sport!!

Cheers

John C

heres my website...the gallery is on my events site..... www.alphapix.co.nz

PS: sorry this post is so bloody long!!

I've seen Julie fight on many occasions, she is one tough cookie. To get back up after that knock down says a lot about her character.[ If that was me on the recieving end of a punch like that I'd would have just thought "O well, try again some other time"] stay down man!!!

What do they feed them down in Crusader Country???
Those fighters from the South are gonna be a force in NZ soon if not already.

Congatulations Karen & to you Highlander for the great Promotion. Gonna order my video from Combat soon.

P.S. Watch out for Sydney Asiata in the heavy weight divison, I think he could be our next big thing here.

For anyone interested Karen Lynch was interviewed for Channel Three News and should be on tonight or within the next couple of nights.

Way to go Karen! Putting Womens Thai out there, and maybe encouraging the North islanders to bring the South islanders up there for fights.

Great images John and Caitlin.

If I were under the same pressure of having to transmit images by 10pm deadline etc, I'd do it the exact same way you chose to John. The obvious practical reason (distance compression benefit of shooting with telephoto) and then moving ringside once I knew I had a tidy connection shot to transmit.

I also think it's a great thing that we have more photographers involved for whatever reason. The fact that you represent a newspaper is even better. I think I've only been to one show in Australia where a newspaper has bothered to send their own photographer out, and that was for the huge Stan Vs Gurkan fight. So again we have clear evidence of the growing popularity of the sport in N.Z. Great news.

Personally, and probably because I'm such a chatterbox, I like it when there is another photographer there to talk shop with. It certainly makes the time go quicker. At the moment, I have two newbie student photographers that I do my best to point in the right direction when my advice is asked for, as well as another pro photographer. We never get in each others way, but instead look after each others equipment should be have to leave the ring to get a drink or go to the loo. At the big televised shows, the other Pro and I will many times pretty much be shooting over the top of each other when room is limited. Sometimes if one of us looses his spot ringside for some silly reason, the other will always try and make room in his corner so both of us can work. This has happened to both of us more than once. I guess the sportsmanship we see from the fighters rubs off onto us.

Bye the way John, I'm very jealous of your 300mm.
I'm contemplating selling my wife's car and jewellery and perhaps then I'd have enough money to buy a second hand one. Very nice piece of glass.

Hey -

A couple of things following the posts written of recent days since wkb-1 -

Firstly - If what I initially posted after John had posted about his images being available on his site etc was understood to mean that I think I should be the one and only photog at the events that I shoot at - no that is not what I meant at all, I happily shoot along side other photogs at fight events all the time - was simply in a defensive post reminding you that I need your continued support as i am not used to other local photogs promoting their work on here.

I do stand by my thoughts and coments that the image girl' deserves a bit of support and loyalty from you guys - alot of you don't realise how much of what I do in this sport I do for very little financial reward, sometimes none - those promotors that do see the value of what I do and acknowledge that I am worth a little of their promotion budget I know who you are and I thank you and appreciate your continued support - I have to draw the line somewhere now ( and I won't deny that a few of the posts on this thread have been some motivation) and the promotors that don't afford me into their budget but want me too and asume I will shoot their promotion anyway are likely now not too be seeing so much of me ringside at their promotion. Which is incredibly unfortunate not only for yourselves and myself but also the fighters on your card adn the sport as a whole.

I too am embarrassed that our work has been compared against eachother as they have been - my shooting style is and has always been more atmospheric than clinical - My work from Taupo that some of you are openly critical of - that's fine whatever, if your comments are valid then I will listen and take what you so on board but remember this - I have been shooting this sport, our sport seriously for probably less than 2 years - I have not had the 10 or 15 years experience than some other photogers that you might compare my work to have had and believe me when I say that I long and strive too someday achieve the standard and consistancy in my work that they do now ( yes I am talkign about you Paul and a few others ) - but that is only going to happen if I keep shooting and keep shooting which I am only going to be happy doing with your continued support and respect.

John, I bet you didn't know what you were getting yourself into huh! sorry again if I offended or appeared to show disrespect to you, not my intention and I appreciate your very constructive post on here a day or two back - I have your email and will email you soon also -

Rex - I don't see the point of bring up the quality at this point of images I took about a year or 18 months ago, I can't even remember which ones they were now ot be honest - and it surprises me that you post about it on here and now when you have seen me around alot and had ample opportunity to discuss how unhappy you were with the images I got to you - if you've got a problem email me, and that goes for anyone else also, I can't fix it if I don't know it's broken'

Anyway - sorry also that this is soo long but this has been doing my head in over the last days and I felt it needed addressing -

and for the record anything in this post is not meant to offend or further the conversations or whatever on here about this - I write as I speak and have alwasy just been myself with you guys.

Cheers -

OK - in the aid of a good video for Sandy, let me tell a story about Scotty Thompson aka the Highlander, anbd why it is no surprise he was the one to hold thew Worlds first 8 Woman tournament ...

My first encounter with Scotty was on my third fight, first in Auckland, (ps as Scotty will tell you I was packing my y fronts big time) but anyway going into Mr thompsons Northshore Gym I remember wlking in just as he was boasting about his new sun bed and all the girls this seemed to attract to his gym (he was smiling ear to ear of course) and then mentioned something about a peep hole, a bright red g string and charging a viewing fee ... off course this was mere youthful boasting (from memory Scotty had some hair then) but the Highlanders fascination with with women has not waned over the years and has lead directly to his being a world's first trend setter.

Scotty Thompson - I see a future for you as the Worlds greatest female kickboxing promotor...

To keep this thread going can anyone else remember more incriminating stories about the Highlanders NZ exploits ... there must be a few ... Ben Ahipene, Lollo, anyone .....?????

Highlander i'd definately be keen! Sounds awesome! Providing i'm not injured from the comp in November-but i don't think i will be from the amount of padding that we apparently have to wear.

hi Karen, i was really impressed with your fights, i think your have a world class right hand as well as many other great skills, i dont think all 18oz gloves and head gear will protect your opponents from your power.

I hope you keep fighting and take good fights that will get you a world title shot soon cause you would be truly worthy.

and Highlander?
What weight was ALL the Girls in this One ?
and Why have you made the next one a Bigger weight diff: ?
shouldnt it be the same?
60 MAX?????
The Highlander
Posted: 2004-08-23 18:19:39
Sandy

Iv'e gone for the 57-63kgs cos 5 of the girls in this one were 58-62kgs and a couple had to lose 1-2kgs to come in so i decided the new weight of 57-63kgs would make a better weight range to get fighters.
