Master Sken launches MSA with ‘Muay Thai Premier League’

Master Sken takes Thai Boxing promotion in the UK to new levels with ‘Muay Thai Premier League’ at the Reebok De Vere White Hotel, Bolton on November 1st, 2009. Sanctioned by the World Muay Thai Council, Thailand, the show features top class World Championship clashes including Saenchai Sor Kingstar (Thailand) V Rob Storey (England), Rungravee Sasiprapa (Thailand) V Andy Howson (England) and Sakeddaw (Thailand) V Liam “The Hit man “Harrison (England). The show is also notable for the fact that it marks the official launch of MSA (Master Sken Academy) which is dedicated to making Muaythai a mainstream global media sport. MSA shows will feature the very best Muay Thai champions from Thailand as well as from around the globe.

Master Sken has teamed up with Dr Swee Lip Quek, to create an organization that will truly stand out as an ambassador for Muay Thai – and turbocharge the profile and essential culture of Thai martial arts within the world of entertainment and media.

The timing for this venture is key to its success and Master Sken notes that various factors have raised the profile of Muay Thai worldwide - not least the global success of the film ‘Ong Bak’ and the commercial impact of the UFC and MMA, especially as Muay Thai is dominant as the stand-up art of many top MMA fighters. Saenchai Sor. Kingstar (Thailand) V Rob Storey (England)
Saenchai is a great champion of Thailand and Thailand Sport Personality of 2008. He defeated Liam” The Hit man” Harrison the beginning of this year. He has all round excellent techniques of Muaythai and Muay Boran and is a living legend. Rob Storey, from Keddles Gym, defeated Rung from Thailand, April this year. Storey is a very tough fighter from an excellent trainer- Alan Keddle. This will be a remarkable fight and people will travel from over the country – and from Europe - to watch this.

2. WMC Supreme World Muaythai Championship
Rungravee Sasiprapa (Thailand) V Andy Howson (England)
Rungravee is recognized as one of (Thai) Television Stadium Channel 5‘s best fighters and was voted ‘Best Fight of the year 2009’. He is from Sasiprapa gym, voted by the Thai media as the ‘Best Muay Thai gym 2008.’ Andy Howson is exceptionally tough and one of the best fighters from our shores. This fight is potentially one of best fights of the year.

3. Sakeddaw (Thailand) V Liam ‘The Hit man’ Harrison (England)
Sakeddaw is a top champion of both the Lumpinee and Ratchadamnern stadiums. In April, he defeated the legendary Anuwat Kaewsamrit, who is a Muaythai superstar and, indeed, ‘living legend’. Again this is another fight that will not disappoint - and is another candidate for the title of ‘Best Fight of the Year’ in 2009.

4 Rung (Thailand/Scotland) V Panikos Yusuf (Cyprus/England)
Rung is very experienced fighter; a former World Champion who has beaten Richard Cadden and many highly ranked fighters from around the World. Panikos won his last two fights by KOs and is a tenacious fighter. Both will come well prepared for what will surely be another thrilling showdown.

As a punter only,I think a daytime show would be better all around? Better for the fighters/trainers so they are'nt fighting last thing at night and the atmosphere would be good as it would'nt be as knackering for supporters too? Rather than people having to shuffle off home/taxes/buses etc late at night?

Quality dig, seen poor old Takeda on fight club suffer couple of painful looking KO's before including a scandal flying knee straight to the face. Can't wait to see Sakeddao and Liam square up!!! like you say, it's going to be warfare!! ha. Whole show lining up to be fantastic with some great quality British fighters like Rob S and Andy H and Liam of course. can't help but feel Muay Thai in this country is on the up and up and maybe on the cusp of something great. Full marks to Master Sken and admittedly i'm biased as he's my master and instructor but with the great shows we've had recently such as the rumble etc he's grbbed bull by the horns and taken it up a level again which is fantastic for everyone and hopefully the fighters can start getting the wider public recognition they deserve as it is such a demanding and hard sport and of course start to get some real financial reward as well. All the portsmouth club are behind this one Master Sken and should be bringing a load of us up to support it.

When Michael Dicks fights for a World title on Grandmaster Sken’s MSA Muay Thai Premier League” Supershow on November 7th it will be yet another highlight for the consistently successful Darlington club run by Paul Hamilton, the coach Dicks was determined to emulate when he started training in Muay Thai. This desire is easy to understand for although many coaches decide to run a gym after a successful fight career few boast the pedigree of Darlington’s Paul Hamilton who started training when he was fifteen and ended up having two hundred and nine fights, losing only nine of these. During this period he competed all over the world including Thailand where he was one of the first Europeans to fight in Rajadamnern and Lumpinee Stadiums in Bangkok, where he worked his way up the rankings to become Champion in both stadiums for his weight.

By the end of his career Paul had won twenty three belts at four different weights, currently the best fight record any European has ever had. He also boxed professionally and had a record of eighteen fights with fourteen wins, two draws and two losses. On the coaching side, this enabled him to join the Amateur Boxing Association (ABA) and gain his Pro- Boxing Trainer’s Licence. It was always Paul’s dream to open his own gym and he did this in 1997, after spending eight years running classes at various venues in and around the local area.



The gym has been running successfully ever since, not only training fighters as the majority of people come for general fitness and confidence, with pupils as young as six and as old as seventy four. The gym offers classes in Boxing, Thai Boxing, kids’ classes (including anti-bullying), adult mixed classes, Freestyle Fitness Yoga and small personal group training sessions for men and women. One-on-one training is also offered on all the above and Krav Maga (self defence) with the aim of providing a facility that is accessible and affordable for the local people in the area (although the gym attracts customers from a thirty mile radius).



Paul has produced some excellent fighters over the years with a constant stream of up and coming fighters making their way through all the time. Gym instructors alongside Paul include Simone Hamilton (Paul’s wife), Michael Dicks (world Muay Thai champion), Neil Walton (Krav Maga instructor & martial arts expert). The team have a good understanding of children’s needs and as well as making training fun they still learn technique and work hard. As they get older and move up the classes, discipline takes over from fun and games as they realise that to be a fighter, dedication and hard work will be vital. When the students have mastered blocking and are sparring with confidence, they may then be ready for the ring. It is easy to throw shots but difficult to block, especially elbows so until they can judge distance and know when to attack, they would not be ready for full Thai Rules.



Paul’s personal favourite achievement was having one of his fighter’s compete at the King of Thailand’s birthday in Bangkok. However, he always feels a sense of achievement having good fighters coming through year after year. His ambitions remain consistent, notably to keep up the high standard at the gym and to keep getting better.

In this respect, Paul is confident about the future of Muay Thai, now that the UKMF is getting stronger and stronger with everybody is fighting under the same rules and standardised judging. As a result, Paul believes that we will get more TV and publicity now with bigger sponsors, thus enabling people to put on bigger and more professional shows. This will ultimately increase the popularity of Thai Boxing if people know it is run by a unified, recognised governing body - especially if it gets accepted by the Olympic Committee, which at the moment is looking very promising.



When it comes to shows, Paul is looking forward to Michael Dicks performing on Grandmaster Sken’s November 7th Muay Thai Premier League Supershow. “Master Sken’s shows have always been very well run. The fight card for November promises a very entertaining night, with some UKMF British Title Fights and WMC World Fights. Everybody wants these recognised titles. There will be some big sponsors getting involved and so it should be a night not to miss.”

That's a fantastic record no doubt about it though must admit I was also surprised to see it state he was a stadium champion.... be interesting to find out if he was, though as already mentioned even if that is incorrect his fight record is excellent.... 96% no losses!!!

The fight record is absolutely accurate. Paul was ranked number 1 in the rankings for both stadiums.

However; at the time no foriegner was allowed to fight for the stadium championship belts. All that has since changed of course.

Pauls last fight was against the channel 7 champion in Australia 13yrs ago.

I verified this with Paul who expressed no interest in having his record made public. paul stated he fought for himself and has no interest in people knowing.

Paul fought anywhere between 55 and 63kgs during his fight career.....

just spoke to paul, i knew he'd had 100s of fights but doubted that he was champion as stated above there havent been many, however he did fight around 15 bouts at the main staidums and fought the top ranked guys and KOed them too, back then tho it wasnt like it is now tho it was a bit of a novelty back then, now anyone can fight there!!! i know he fought Ramon Dekker 2x too and beat him once...

Michael Dicks: “Whoever Grandmaster Sken puts in front of me, it will be a tough fight!”

Grandmaster Sken’s November 7th MSA Muay Thai Premier League” Supershow is brimming with home grown talent - and one of the stars of the night will be Darlington’s Michael Dicks as he challenges Andre Kulebin for the WMC World title. Dicks would make many ‘Top 5’ lists of fighters in this country but his is a story you hear more frequently in boxing, namely that of the bad boy made good through dedication to his sport. Thrown out of mainstream school for always being in trouble, Michael visited Paul Hamilton’s gym as part of his specialist school’s programme and when the programme finished Michael carried on training.



He was inspired to emulate the Darlington gym’s coach, as Paul’s career was one of unrivalled success both at home and abroad winning a total of twenty three belts across four weights. Michael quickly established himself as a fighter to watch, his all action style accompanied by a high knockout ratio and although he was flamboyant within the ring, he was modest and quietly spoken in interviews. As his skill and reputation grew, Michael honed his skills and developed a more disciplined approach. Perhaps the most important key to his success is the fact that he gives every fight one hundred percent focus. “I treat every fight the same, and prepare for them all in the same way mentally. I may adopt a different style of training depending on my opponent’s style but, mentally, every fight is equally important.”

Given his style and the level of opponent he has fought, Michael has been in his share of tough fights, using the hard lessons of defeat to better himself whilst savouring some of the more memorable victories including fighting for and winning the WMC Intercontinental title on Paul’s own promotion in his own hometown -“an amazing experience.” He also felt hugely privileged to fight on the Thai King’s Birthday show in Bangkok in December 2007. Moments like this have helped to temper his biggest disappointment which was losing the WMC MAD World title when he was sure he had won the fight.
Now Michael is ready for any challenge and does not dismiss UK fighters pointing out that whilst there is a wider range of fighters outside the UK, there is always going to be new and old challenges for him on home soil and with that in mind, he has a number of hard fights coming up between now and November 7th including a bout in Italy. Then it is his World title fight on Grandmaster Sken’s show and Michael believes it will be another great show by the hugely respected veteran promoter. “Master Sken always puts a lot of effort into great match making. His shows are always very dynamic with lots of explosive fights, which is always good to watch. The atmosphere is always exciting and the bouts are always first class.”

Andy Thrasher:"UK Muay Thai fans are in for a real treat!"

Andy Thrasher’s inclusion in the line-up for Grandmaster Sken’s “MSA Muay Thai Premier League” show on Saturday 7th November 2009 is a continuation of a relationship that goes back to 1998 and Andy’s introduction to the art of Muay Thai. A keen footballer at the time, Andy originally went to the GFC club, then Heywood Sitnarong under (then) Master Sken, simply to help heal a collarbone injury but fell in love with the art of Muay Thai and the rest, as they say, is history.

It was the beginning of a career that has been defined by Andy’s all-action style and a high knockout ratio that has seen him hugely popular with fans, fellow fighters and promoters alike. Master Sken puts Andy’s popularity in perspective when he states-“I have organized many Muay Thai shows and Andy Thrasher has participated in these shows. I found that he is an exceptional fighter. He has fought many high quality opponents. On Sunday 31st May he won the WKA World championship and proved himself one of Britain best fighters.”

Whilst he admits that sometimes the only way to win a fight is to dig deep and have an old-fashioned tear-up, Andy is no one trick pony and has always sought to develop and mature as a fighter with improved technique and tactics. To this end he believes that all Thai fighters must eventually train in Thailand. Although he has trained with some top Thai trainers and fighters Andy hasn’t trained in Thailand yet but will rectify that by travelling to the Jitti gym in July, and hopefully once or twice more later in the year. “I really think it will make me a more rounded fighter, and help me step up a level”, he says.

Andy has already reached a commendable level in the sport, having fought numerous top names such as Craig Jose (twice), Tim Thomas and World, Commonwealth, European, Spanish and French Champions. The highlight for Andy so far has been his most recent fight against Javier (Kuki) Rodriguez, the Spanish Champion, whom he stopped on his home turf by way of a third round KO. The win shows that Andy is in fine winning form at the moment but his hardest fight was actually a loss to Michael Dicks. Andy took the fight at short notice and was carrying an injury but just wanted the opportunity to fight Dicks. “Michael is a machine and never stops coming forward, and despite losing the fight, I felt I came away having learned some very valuable lessons.”

Andy proved he had learned those lessons by beating Dave Newbrook for the WKA World title in May, a fantastic achievement that he is obviously delighted with. “This world title was a dream come true, the venue and show were superb, with 13 full Thai rules A class fights. It was a long day, but I remained focused and stuck to the game plan. Fortunately it paid off. I just listened to my corner and let my reactions take over, it was fantastic to win.”

When it comes to his peers, Andy states that he admires anyone that really commits to the sport as the purse money for Thai fighters is not yet on a par with its major fightsport counterparts, so to pay the bills whilst training to fight at the top level takes a lot of determination and focus. As a result, he name checks Craig Jose, Michael Dicks, Damien Trainor, Andy Howson, James France, Richard Cadden and Jordan Watson but reserves special praise for Steven Wakeling and Liam Harrison. “They have given so much to the sport and it shows with the success and quality opponents that they have fought and beaten in the last couple of years.”

Thai Boxers may not yet reap the rewards seen by Professional Boxers but Andy truly believes that Muay Thai can rival any televised fightsport, noting that the huge success of MMA is based in no small measure on the dynamic stand-up which is heavily Muay Thai influenced. Add to this the growing success of the ‘Contender Asia’ series and Andy believes that it is only a matter of time before the sport gets the coverage he feels it really deserves. For his part, Andy is staying busy, fighting Dave Newbrook for his WKA World title on 31st May, on The Rumble at the Reebok show and then again on Master Ronnie Green’s Tribute show at Old Trafford on the 4th of July, with the possibility of a rematch with Redwan Ameur, the French and European WMC Champ.

Then of course there’s November 1st and Grandmaster Sken’s star-studded show, which Andy is obviously very excited about being a part of this. As he states “Master Sken always promotes exciting shows, with good quality matchmaking. If the names I have heard mentioned for this show are anything to go by then UK Muay Thai fans are in for a real treat! And if that’s not a good enough reason, then people should come along to buy me a drink after my fight as it is my birthday that day.”

Richard Smith: Keeping Bad Company

Named after a comic strip in 2000AD that coach Richard Smith used to read when he was a kid, the ‘Bad Company’ gym has become a breeding ground for champion fighters, a veritable conveyor belt of talent and two of ‘Bad Co’s’ finest, Liam ‘The Hitman’ Harrison and Andy ‘The Punisher’ Howson will be fighting title on Grandmaster Sken’s MSA Muay Thai Premier League Supershow on November 7th. His fighters headlining on such a prestigious event is further proof that Richard has achieved his ambition for the Bad Company gym to be known as one of the top gyms as far as world calibre fighters are concerned, with the current crop of fighters emulating the success of previous generations of fighting greats such as Lisa Houghton-Smith, Steve Deane and Steve Rutherford.

Richard is quick to point out, however, that it’s not all about fighters and he hopes that the gym can make as much difference to the lives of as many people as possible, from young lads who walk in off the street and end up world class fighters travelling all over the world to those lacking confidence who come in and end up losing weight, getting fit, making friends or even going onto ring combat. “Lisa and I have always tried to be inclusive at the gym and we accept anyone whatever their ability. As long as they put in the commitment, we will give it back to them.”

Much has changed since Richard started the gym, including the standards as he believes we are beginning to understand Muay Thai now. When Richard started travelling to Thailand to train and fight, there was little by way of the sport over here. But he is delighted that it’s really opened up now and standards in the UK and across the world have really risen. “We now understand scoring; how to train and win in Muay Thai; have many gyms who have Thai trainers over; and see many fighters who travel to Thailand for extended periods for training.” As a result, he believes that some of the trainers in the UK now are second to none and are producing real world class fighters. “The standard of promotion across the country every week has really risen with domestic fighters against top international opposition.”

Richard genuinely loves the sport and loves coaching. He never gets tired of putting this across to other people as he constantly tries to learn and improve himself. Bad Company is not just about Richard though. He tries to empower all the younger ones coming through and allows them to express themselves in the gym - and get the credit that they deserve. The main fighters in the gym, in turn, all help to coach and train one another. They bounce techniques and ideas off each other and everyone benefits that way. “This way we haven’t really had anyone leave to start their own gym and we’ve kept the talent that they all have in-house.”

Many of his camp now fight full Thai rules and Richard knows when they are ready just by looking at their training and how they cope with sparring and fitness work. He believes that it’s not really about how good their technique is, rather how big their heart is - how hard they can push themselves in the gym and how committed they are. “With full rules I like to see them thinking a bit more in the fight and not just fighting like beginners.”

The club has had many notable achievements over the years and the fighters who have won big fights and won titles are always memorable but Richard is equally satisfied with the number of people who have come in including some he never thought would stick at it, but who have and have gone on to do really well and achieve amazing things. His proudest moment however was when his wife, Lisa, won and successfully defended her world titles - and winning BBC Look North Sportswoman of the Year. Richard was also pleased to win the Yorkshire Post Sports Coach of the Year. “It was nice to get some recognition from outside of the sport.”

With so much already achieved, Richard simply wants to keep the great family atmosphere that the club has and to keep enjoying it as much as he always has. With this in mind, he has strong views on how to develop the sport into the mainstream. “I have always said that we need to work on quality. As the standard of fighters and promotions get better, the public and the media will start to notice. If you look at some of the rubbish that was getting televised even as recently as three years ago, there’s no wonder the sport isn’t taken seriously. It’s getting better but I honestly don’t think there has been a high enough standard consistently across the board for us to be able to get any more popular.”

On a positive note, Richard believes that change is happening and the standard is gradually rising as typified by shows such as Grandmaster Sken’s supershow on November 7th at De Vere Whites in Bolton. This is something Richard is quick to acknowledge. “Thanks to Master Sken for another great opportunity for the boys. We’ll do our best to justify his faith in us.”

sorry but I don't believe that at all! Fujiwara was the Ratchadamnern champion in 1978 met him not long ago and he is in his 60's now. So your saying you used to be able to fight for the title, then you couldn't and now you can again. The muaythai scene here is not so big that they simply forget fighters and if he was as said ranked number one in both stadiums he would be talked about all the time here. Not taking anything away from Paul as a fighter as I know he had a lot of fights and remember seeing him fight against an old stablemate of mine back in the day, Martin Smith from Cobra, but in nearly 20 years of training and spending a lot of time watching fights in Thailand ive never seen him fight once there or heard his name mentioned either for that matter. At those weights mentioned the level of the stadium fighters is very high indeed and again no disrespect to Paul, but I just don't think he was at that level and if he was he would be a big name here.

Actually you could fight for a stadium belt and be a foriegner but would have to be considered a nationalised thai. With Paul being a pale skinned, short arse from the north of england he was a far cry from qualifying

lol when you having people like Master Sken and the team trying hard to push the profile of the sport with big shows, then surely things like that don't help, when it is so obvious and when it is so easy to prove otherwise, if you think im being disrespectful so be it, but this sport could do without the endless fabrication of stuff. Maybe people should be more respectful to themselves and the sport first and stop making up bullshit claims then maybe the rest of the world would take it more seriously, just a thought eh!

Have just spoken with Paul regarding this and it looks like it was a case of creative writing going a little too far and also not what he wanted. As I said I have myself seen Paul fight many many years ago and know he has had a huge amount of fights. Apologies to Paul for jumping the gun a little, but hopefully other people will not try to overpromote stuff like this in the future so that the sport can get a bit more credibilty and people that have obviously put a lot into the sport Like Paul dont come across in the wrong way.

another reason not to miss this show, Saenchai announced in the papers today that he will habng up his gloves in december, he stated he will fight on this show in U.K in november and then wants to have his last fight in Lumpini in december on the Lumpini birthday show. He stated that one of the main reasons is he can't take the big drops down in weight anymore and he has signed with a Thai football team and will become a pro football player.

So if you have never seen him in action, this may well be one of the last chances you will get!

if he is on top of his game he'll give mike a decent fight if not i think he'll be lucky to take a round off micheal and thats the diff in my opinion even when michael is not on top form he's still mustard .

Liam Harrison: “All fighters are just flesh and blood!”

Few UK fighters have reached the heights that Liam ‘The Hitman’ Harrison has scaled in his career. His record is regularly punctuated with the best Thai fighters, fought on their home soil. Liam has another tough Thai in his sights when he takes on current Rajadamnern champion Sakkedao but this time it will be on ‘The Hitman’s’ home turf as they compete on Grandmaster Sken’s November 7th “MSA Muay Thai Premier League” supershow. It’s another defining fight for ‘The Hitman’ and he is well aware that it promises to be a real challenge. “It’s going to be a very tough fight as Sakkedao is a very strong, tall fighter who likes to march forward using big knees. He’s the current Rajadamnern champion also and has recently beaten Anuwat and KO’d Nong B.” Some may find this intimidating but Liam’s wealth of experience has taught him that he needs fear no one. “I soon realised they are just flesh and blood like everyone else. I must have faced around thirty Thai fighters now, from not so great island fighters to top 10 ranked and champions.”

He may be a hardened fight veteran now but Liam’s attitude to the sport remains refreshingly simple as he admits that all he has ever wanted to do is fight. This desire to fight has been supplemented by an equally strong urge to prove that he is one of the best fighters out there - the reason he relishes fighting the best Thais. It’s a philosophy and fight regime that sees his style regularly adapt. “My physical style probably changes every couple of fights because I’m always trying to learn more and add to my game to try and become a complete fighter.”

With this in mind, Liam has found it invaluable training and fighting in Thailand. “I’ve fought and trained a lot in Thailand and have enjoyed gaining valuable tips and experience from the trainers at Jitti gym in Bangkok. My Trainer, Richard Smith, also spends a lot of time training in Thailand and is always adding new things to his ever extensive repertoire too, this is one of the reasons Bad Company is ever-improving and we have a good mix and balance with training.” Richard Smith has been a huge influence on Liam’s career and he remembers watching Richard fight against Takashi Ohno at Leeds town hall and it was one of the greatest fights he’d ever seen, to the point that before every one of his first ten fights he’d get the fight out and watch it to get him in the right mood to do battle himself.

Liam’s natural fighting ability saw fruition when he won the WMC World title, bitter-sweet revenge against Nmahphon PK Sterio in Nov 2007, winning by KO against the current champion and number one ranked fighter at Rajadamnern. It says a lot for Harrison though that his most memorable fights are losses rather than victories, both to Thai fighters. The first was against Duwao Kongudom. Despite dropping Duwao in the second round Liam says the Thai then “went on a rampage and landed solid knees and elbows for the rest of the fight to win. I was really banged up after that fight”. The second fight, against Saenchai Sor Kingstar, wasn’t gruelling it was more frustrating as Saenchai was hard to tag with big shots. “I ended up playing him at his own game and although I had some success for the first three rounds a big fourth from him secured the win.”

With Liam set to fight another top Thai on Grandmaster Sken’s MSA Supershow, ‘The Hitman’ is rightly excited by the event and its impact on Muay Thai in this country. “It’s without doubt the biggest show of the year so far, and has the best British fighters and champions from Thailand, including Andy Howson vs Rungravee sasiprapa which will be ‘war!’ as both fighters are known for going forward and throwing elbows. It also has current Rajadamnern champion Sakkedao facing myself, and the best pound for pound fighter on the planet, Saenchai Sor Kingstar, facing Rob Storey.”

Andy Howson “It’s going to be war!”

Andy Howson’s all-action style has seen him become a double World Champion and he is looking to add a prestigious third title to that tally at Grandmaster Sken’s Grandmaster Sken’s November 7th “MSA Muay Thai Premier League” supershow as he goes to war once more, this time against Thailand’s Rungravee Sassiprapa (who is currently ranked in the top 5 in the Rajadamnern stadium). With both men having a very aggressive style it is a fight the fans will relish and a genuine contender for fight of the year.

He may be at the top of his game now but Andy never saw the career coming as he only started Muay Thai because one of his workmates wanted someone to go with him. Three months later and Andy already had his first fight - but he only really started to believe in his own potential when he won the European title. “So I changed my job and started to train full time, making it my number one concern in life. Now to be fair, two World titles and fighting for a third down the line, I wouldn’t change it for anything. I love everything about it.”

With two World titles, Andy is at the top of the tree nationally, a position reinforced by three epic encounters with Damien Trainor, a man Andy cites as a major influence on his early career. “I loved watching him and he was the reason I wanted to start fighting. I still enjoy watching him fight and we are good mates. I have so much respect for that guy which you can tell in all three of our fights. He is a UK Muay Thai legend.” With Andy winning the rubber match in February of this year, he now believes that his future lies in the challenges that fighting the top Thai fighters at his weight can bring.

Those challenges have seen Andy hit the canvas in all three of his major title fights only to get back up and win them, a warrior’s attitude that makes him such a big fan favourite. In fact, his is a career defined by tough fights, none more so than his epic battle with Kantipong Tapar Guar, who was ranked number five at the Raja stadium and was also Omnoi stadium champion with over one hundred and fifty fights to his name when Andy fought him. It was Andy’s twenty-sixth fight and he took Kantipong the distance, despite acknowledging that Kantipong was awesome. It was some consolation to hear Kantipong tell Andy that he had given him the hardest fight he had been in.

Formula one events have aeroplane displays, Bikes events stunt shows.....the demonstrations ar'nt for you or the hundreds of others attending to see the fights. They're for those new to the sport. Offering a variety of displays to raise awareness and capture imaginations.

Id be the first one to say demonstrations are an opportunity for a swift beer at the bar. but I also recognise there place in the grand scheme of things...Plus if any one in the audiance can jump that high and kick that accurately theres still time for them to join the preparations and help with the demonstrations ha ha.....

it was in this thread that started off about a fight on august 2nd but i think the guy was referring to yesterday when he was talking about rungravee

Rungravee (Dom) did lose yesterday on points, Dom was the more aggressive fighter and moved forward as he does.

I think the fight between Dom and Andy is going to be a great fight, should be very interesting and since there has been so much talk about match up's, this fight should be a perfect match. Anyone got a spare few quid for a plane ticket?

Rungrawee lost on points to Narunart, was a great fight with Rungrawee going forward throughout. If the fight was at Lumpini he may have got the nod as they tend to favour the walk forward fighters more than ch7.

yeh he had a last minute change of opponent as Jomthong pulled out. Fought Daoprakai Sor Sommai and suprisingly dropped him with punches in 3rd and had him all over the shop, in rd 4 Daoprakai stunned Sagetdao a little with some big punches of his own, but wasn't enough and Sagetdao won points.

Have to agree with Liam on this big time, Andy deserves to fight for the WMC World Title, his fight career is second to none in this country and he is a worthy World Champion. What I and many others would like to know is why Stephen Fox will sanction the Alex Kulebin v Michael Dicks fight and not Andy's ??? would be good if Mr. Fox would come on here and explain his reason's for this. This is the biggest show to be promoted in the UK and after all both GM Sken's and Andy's hard work and dedication over all these years in Muay Thai this show deserves this fight to be for the WMC World Title. I hope the powers that be see sense and sanction this fight it's the very LEAST Andy deserves after everything he has achieved in our sport.

Hey up guys, first off thanks for the support, and second of all when i spoke to Master Sken this morning he made it clear that it wasnt stephan or Ralph's doing as they too where really pushing for the fight to be for the title, Mr Smith also cleared that up with me when i had a chat to him, it is the powers that be in Thailand that hate me and dont want me to fight for it,lol. On a serious note though of course i am bothered but at the end of the day it isnt the belt that your fighting for that makes you a good/great fighter its who you fight and who you beat, and all this has done is made me more determind to put on a scandalous display of whacking and win this fight and win it well, then i can look and laugh at them about it, and after all it isnt the wmc who has got me where i am or made me the fighter i am today it is a mixture of me, Richards training, and brilliant management, loads of help and advice from Liam and all the Thai trainers at Jitti Gym and the support from my family that has so thanks, and let the smacking commence. If/When i beat Rungravee they will have to give me a shot and guess what?? i may turn it down,lol.

Fair point and respectfully i reitterate I was advised I did not state verbatum that dave did not/could not want the fight. fighting or not fighting has nothing surely to do with the gym dave trains in surely given that its over 2 months away? we're ready should Dave still want to fight.

However; as ever it is unfortunate when fighter and trainer no longer see eye to eye and go their separate ways. I trust Dave and mark resolve any differences as soon as is possible.

David Southern is a Good fighter and a Great person looking for a better gym.

the english title is classified as B class european rules. Also; we said we'd fight luke but he wanted to fight at 66kgs. The best we can do is 67/68kgs.

Dave is a fantastic fighter and a really great person that i agree with, but its the remark about the 'better gym' thats has my attention. Mark works damn hard for everyone who uses his gym, not only the fighters but the everyday people who come to train. So please explain whats ment by the "Better gym comment".

Rungravee is class. Seen him fight 5 times now and from what ive seen I personally feel he's gonna do Andy Howson over. He's another class all together. The man can battle 5 rounds full pace non stop without getting tired and his chin is unbelievable. He's like a robot. Dont underestimate this psycho Andy. He's dangerous. Hes got pure venom in him.

Sakeddaw. I trained with him for 7 months. His tehnique is awesome. Power amazing and chin made of metal. Seen him fight loads. I rekon hes gonna do a number on Liam Harrison. Just becasue Liam fought Sanchai (one of the greatest nak muay) dont mean he cant lose or get sparked out by someone less noticable.

Big thank you to Master Sken for matching Stevie Meikle with Alex Abusin, this is a great opportunity for Stevie to return to the UK scene having spent most of last year in Thailand, training first with Fairtex, then more recently with RMB. He has stayed very active and has a great understanding of scoring well in muay thai, he is a smart fighter with stamina for days, this should be a great match.

alex is under no illusions this is a harder fight that he had hoped for. certainly stevie's got the experience over Alex but following a tried and tested formula of always being the under dog and fighting above our ranked position, we look forward to the challenge.

Any betting happening on this show folks?

I met Stephen whilst out in Thailand and he had said that he was due to fight Jordan Watson on this show and I was going to ask if it was definite as hadn't seen it mentioned on here but looks like it is. Stephen seemed a really nice fella, although just about all the fighters I've seen or met seem to be decent blokes, but he's gonna have a hard time of it with mr Watson - another excellent bout and good mix of styles.Can't believe how fast this show is coming round!! Am I the only person that thinks Rob could pull off a shock? Even if he doesn't win I'm going for him to really push Saenchai and surprise a few people... easier said than done mind!! ha many have tried before. Reckon the Michael Dicks fight will be a barnstorming affair as he doesn't possess a reverse gear! So many great fights and no clear or easy calls as the matches are all good... my only prediction is we'll all be gutted when it's over!!!!

As much as i like seanchai as a fighter (the man is purely awesome), im really gunning for Rob to take this yes i know him personally but he is a seriously fit little twat with the heart of a lion , so YES i do hope a causes a shock and beats Saenchai.

i dont know liam half as much but still wanted him to take it too .

Rob seems to enjoy being cut tho the sick fooker lol so if it dont end that way i think he has a fighters chance and bloody good luck to him too .

For anyone in Scotland that has tickets or has bought tickets off the internet and doesn't want to drive to the show I have 10 seats left on the coach and I have 1 £30 ticket left. Alot of stoppages, which will make exciting TV when aired on SKY that will hopefully get outsiders hooked.

What stopped the Howson fight?

Has been a brilliant weekend and a fab show.

all the fights were excellent,
fight of the night (for me) was Andy Thrashers fight against Mehdi Zatout, really exciting, non-stop action back and forth and was very close, enjoyed it immensely, Andy had so much support and the crowd were on their feet throughout, should be an ace rematch.

gutted for Andy Howson, his leg was done in but he didnt want to stop and had to be held back (literally). still the most exciting fighter in the UK imo!

Liam was on fire but just cleverly outscored, it was like watching him and Numphon (first time) all over again.

Ron Storey showed alot of heart and looked like he enjoyed himself alot which was great to watch. Saenchai was typically awesome and is such an amazing showman and entertainer and unstoppable, such a shame Muay Thai is loosing him to footy but God help the footballer who tries to foul him!

Jordan Watson showed tonight exactly what he is capable of. Everything about him is simply another level, his timing, technique and power is second to none,and he makes it all look so incredible easy but credit to stevie meikle who just wouldnt give up and is tough as nails.

well done master sken on a absolutley brilliant show, we all had a great time x

I just want to respond to Uncle K's point. I think there is a far easy explanation. I completely accept these where top quality opponents but no matter how unpopular this statement is going to be I stand by it both in writing and in person

Instructors and fighters in the UK are trying so hard to be like the Thai's that they don't actually have a system to beat them. Instructors imerse themselves so much in the Thai way of fighting, judging, reffing, scoring that they never ever sit and think for one second how they can actually get a strategy to beat them. When they are with the Thai's they are in awe of them and when they are in the UK they think they are a far better instructor than anyone else and discredit anyone who doesn't agree with them.

Example: Ramon Dekkers had a system that although was not a million miles away from the Thai's was tweaked enough to be very, very effective against the Thais. That's why I also think top european guys beat our guys regular because they don't aspire to be "Just like the Thai's"

It is no coincidence ALL our guys where beaten against foreign opponents last night and GMS show. We have some EXCEPTIONAL talent but I believe the drive to be like a "Thai" is stopping them just going that one extra gear. I think it's a trainer thing that believe everything "Thai" is the right way. So, that get's past down to the fighter.

If you want to beat say Mike Tyson you don't go to train with him. You find a way to beat him. Why does everyone think that to beat the Thai's the best thing is to train with them? Would the best approach not be to train with them find their weaknesses then go away and exploit it. Or, are we saying as UK MT "There is no weaknesses in the Thai way of fighting?" So let's copy it move for move

When I stopped training Colin the number of comments through the grape vine I heard from Daz Morris, Darren Phillips (Both whom trained him after me) about "Colin can't clinch for toffee" "Colin can't elbow" Both exactly right to a point. The amount of clinch and elbows he could do was enough for where we were up to with is fighting (Both could have been developed as and when needed) My point is. Both these trainers thought it was some kind of taboo that he didn't do the "Thai Style" Both totally brushed aside that he could punch your head off because it didn't fit with the "Thai Way"

I know this statement is going to be very unpopular and some ego's are going to be dented so the first line to defend that is attack. If I'm totally wrong can anyone give a logical explanation as to why our very best fighters where ALL beaten last night?

My ultimate question is this.

Are UK fighters trying so hard to copy Thai fighters it's actually stopping them from having the ultimate strategy to beat them and top European fighters?

IMO the only thing that Ramon had to do to put that bit of polish on his game that would have made his punching an addition to his abilities rather than something he relied on specifically, was to be a bit more 'Thai style' (just imagine if he could clinch?)
I believe strongly that you have to know the rules, the techniques and the strategies of the sport, and only then you apply that something extra (if your clever enough or good enough to develop that).
Foundation is paramount, what you build on top of that is variable (to an extent). The basics have to be mastered first, that is no different than any other sport.
Most of our best fighters are those that train the system. We don't beat Thai's often because we are not pro in this country. Our fighters though, are technically better now than when i was involved and long may that improvement continue.

Another point, on reflection, is that if formulating a system that would win against traditional techniques and values, why has no-one anywhere done it?

nigel..... your not going to beat the thais easy whatever strategy you have.... you get skilfull thais. and the come for a war type thais, but all still have good technique to match with it.... if our fighters have no thai technique or dont train that way then no they wont ever beat them... the same old debate comes up.... if you dont want to fight muay thai as it should be go do k1 or something!!!!! simple !!!! you dont play football and ask them to change the rules just because your a different country, everyone plays the same rules.... so if we do muay thai then we go by the rules they use in thailand and the scoring system... muay thai in britain has vastly improved dont bring it down with stupid comments !!!

what is there to say about the countless times we HAVE beaten Thais and Europeans? often with our guys working full time for a living too!

The Biggest differnce is the Thais train full time + fight every month since they are kids,if all european fighters did this aswell we would be the same if not better
Also the thais been poor (thats the only reason they fight)fighting to make some sort of Life for them selfs will push them more than anything to train + fight Harder
90% of the worlds best fighters in any sport will come from a poor back round

Nigel I couldnt agree with you more and have been saying the same thing for years. My dad was and still is a prime example of that. He never tried to mimic the thais he aknoweledge their strengths and weaknesses and used his ability to try an out strategise them which obviously worked.

This is something I have instilled in myself and my students for many years and believe it is the only way to try and get close to the thais. After all you cant expect to beat a thai fighting there way. There just too good at it.

I spoke to Ajarn Takoon yesterday at the show and he said to me there are some good fighters in the UK like Liam, Andy, Dicksy, Thrasher, Watson to name but a few but they are not Super Stars like Ronnie Green. He said the Thais would come to watch my Dad in thailand and want to watch him fight.

Take Liam's fight for example. Liam had more succes using his hands against the thai which then allowed him to score with other techniques. But oh I forgot according to some people punches dont score so whats the point.

It is this narrow mindedness as to why our fighters fall short when it comes to beating the thais and the fact that they are trying to mimic them.

Although Liam is a great fighter, IMO he had far more succes by using his hands to set up his legs etc earlier on in his career and was far more effective all round.

To me Jordan Watson you are the man a great thinking fighter with a great approach to strategy much love and respect to you my friend.

I can see where Nige is coming from but our lads are fighting at the top of the tree now so losses come with the wins, thats part of the game.

We also have to adhere to the points scoring of Muay Thai as those are the rules set for years and years, so it`s up to us to make sure we get the points on the board according to Muay Thai points scoring criteria.

It`s ok relying on punches etc if you are setting yourself up for a KO, but if its apparant after the first couple of rounds that you`ve got a granite chin in front of you then you really have to revert back to the Thai way to get a points decision by winning the next 3 rounds.

Anyway, well done all yesterday, far better to be challenging the best and losing than getting a chain of wins against sub-standard opponents.

but dont forget, 20 years ago when ronnie and dekkers were on the thai scene, the thais werent used to the power and use of boxing style of the westeners.
i belive NOW that boxing is growing and is very very popular in thailand especialy over the last 5 years or so,and speaking with orono and sakubon, alot of camps now in thailand are training their new students in boxing first! then moving to muaythai once a solid foundation is build with the hands (also keeping a check on boxing skills of certain students for the thai boxing team in respect of the olympics)
thailand are changing tactics and strategy too! :)

Boxing is nothing new in Thailand,There have been so many good boxing champions and still are.

Nak Muay in the 1960s used far more hand skills than is generally used now(exept by specialist fighters).

My teacher told me "hands are the best ko tools in Muay Thai,however they are the hardest to get in" my experience tells me the same,the value of a good pair of hands is obvious but the whole game has to be developed in a balanced way.

A example could be a fighter that has no ko power in his hands and no chin,have him walk forward and he would get murdered by a clincher.

The example of Ramon D isnt great imho because Ramon had ko power in both hands,a chin of Granite and the heart of a elephant.

Remember Samart Payakarun?(how couldnt we) great hands,but man he could kick,knee,elbow,trick and clinch with the best of them to,tht in turn allowed him to get his hands home.

Samart won WBC world boxing title b4 loosing it to Jeff Fenick !!!

Also Sot Chitlada came over here and destroyed Charlie Magrie !!!

Ramon Deckers changed the sport in Thailand there was also some good Japanese fighters in the early days along with Damian Meyers from Oz who was in Thailand fighting in the 80s

Each reigon and then within in that each country will have its own paricular style born from the local culture and the differing wants of local fans.

Its the same in ever other sport boxing, football, rugby, cricket..etc etc

The Aussies took Rugby and Cricket made their own style that fits their national identity and thier crowds now we employ their top coaches.

And the South Americans took football and developed their own styles as have the Africans.

I beleive British fighters do have their own style already, the dutch are a bit more advanced in having thier own style developed and well recognised but so what.

With the current generation of British traniers and fighters spending so much time in Thailand in 10 years top fighters may be able to develop in this country without going abroad to train due to the knowlegde and experince that will be here..the dutch can already do that but the UK is getting there.

Your dad didn't have the education that is around now. He was great in spite of and not because of his limited (that needs to be taken in context) education. Had Ronnie been around today with the attributes he possessed then, he may well have been the product that Nige is looking for. I go back a long way with your dad and we have had these conversations. There were people who rode on the back of your talents. Ask him what he would do differently with his training if he had his time again? I'm sure you will find that he would have developed the 'Thai' basics that were not available to us at the time.

PHILIP TAN I have'nt seen Phil since we last trained together almost 20 years ago at Master Skens apart from being a Hollywood movie star he is one of the 'genuine' nice guys in the martial arts!!!

CHLOE BRUCE as always was AMAZING!!! I've got to get some stretching done now she's not Muay Thai but what a display of kicking ability a really true inspiration WOW! Chloe is always a pleasure to watch at Master Skens shows in between the fights all I can say is BRILLIANT!!!

JORDAN WATSON is the footwork king he makes it look so easy he's got such a relaxed style,perfect timing and some wickedly fast kicks and Steve Meikle what a tough guy!

RUNG what happened to this hard as nails Thai/Scots man? I love watching his fights as he he always comes for a tear up but this time he began blowing early? and when he pulled out we could'nt see what happened because the cameraman was in the way?

ANDY HOWSON my heart went out to Andy he was in with one tough cookie who was on a mission to seek and destroy, Rungravee stuck to a set game plan and seemed to always be a few steps ahead of Andy throughout the fight.He really worked on Andy's leg and it was painful to watch, Rungravee hacked away at his back leg with those strong kicks and was relentless.
Andy you are a true warrior and we all hope you recover quickly from those kicks you had my wife almost in tears as she really wanted you to win!!!

ANDREI KULEBIN all the fighters from the Eastern Block countries seem to be expressionless and hard as nails Kulebin was one of them,Michael Dicks is a superb fighter but that kick of Kulebin's came out of nowhere in that first round and soon put a smile on Andrei's face!!!

ANDY THRASHER as always a real crowd pleaser and he did'nt dissapoint a shame he lost but what a war if anyone deserves a major title like this then Andy does for all his hard work another true warrior!!!

LIAM HARRISON what does he have to do to win his fights? Liam was constantly going forward pushing the pace,he was the stronger of the two although Sakeddao had terrific balance and defence I still thought that Liam did enough to win,as always he showed total respect for his opponent after the fight,
Liam you are a true star!!!

SAENCHAI SOR KINGSTAR this was our final chance to see what everyone has been talking about and he did'nt dissapoint UNBELIEVABLE!!! Rob Storey did a great job but what can you do against the greatest Muay Thai fighter on the planet?

I've got to say thats the best show i've to for a long time where i actually sat down & watched & enjoyed the fights. So congrats to Master Sken & Dan Green for pulling it off.

Got home this afternoon and still buzzing from the whole event!!! Everyone of us who came up really enjoyed it. I enjoyed it from the moment we arrived at about 11 o'clock! ha, just the venue itself got me in the mood as it felt professional and you could tell it was going to be a quality affair. Then things got going and it never disappointed, not once. The fights were all good and the standard was first class throughout.... rated so many but especially the french lad who fought Andy Thrasher as he was a bit of an unknown quantity but was razor sharp with great footwork! the technique of the day seemed to be the low kicks!! certainly caused some damage in so many fights.. lot of people limping afterwards!! The demo's were really good and added to the whole day and helped to put the razzamatazz in it and also gave the show an increased family appeal. Once again, great fights, great fighters, great entertainment, great organisation, no queues no aggro.. simply brilliant. Well done to Master Sken and Dan Green, all the fighters and coaches and everyone else that made it a well worthwhile trip up from Portsmouth. Already counting down to the MEN!!!

I feel mental this was the best show i,ve been to ever,Coxy was great the commentary from him was first class and he does know his stuff,razor sharp wit,he was awesome as for the fighters you are all fantastic i am proud to know you and class you as mates.
Master Sken deserves are credit as does Dan,Flick,Dougie and the rest i am ona real high after this the dream job in the dream sport class!!! xx

Well done to Master Sken and MSA promotions on a fantastic show. Every fight was great and it was well run, well organised and great to be a part of. Another great step upwards for Muay Thai in this country.

Jordan was fantastic and looked great against Stephen who is as tough as nails and has the heart of a lion.

As said above Andy is too tough for his own good he wanted to fight on and was gutted when we withdrew him. Rungravee hurt him early with very powerful kicks and it made the whole fight an uphill battle for him. Rungravee is very powerful and a superb fighter. Andy went out in a blaze of glory really taking the fight to Rungravee in round 3 who quite obviously didnt like it at all. If Andy hadnt shipped so much punishment early on I think he could have turned it round later in the fight but he was hurt and there was the potential for real injury so I pulled him out. Sorry mate.

Liams was a great fight and although it was close he was clearly outpointed. Sakedau just knew how to play the game and did what he needed to do to stay ahead and nullify Liams attacks. Although Liam landed some great punches he wasnt able to get his kicks off. It was a very impressive performance from both fighters. This was not just situation of doing very well against a better opponent - Liam was in the same league and fought great he just didnt manage to get through and pull it off this time.

Every time our fighters fight at this level I see ways that our training needs to be adapted and we will go back to the gym and work on what we have learned. Liam still gets better with each fight. The Thais are fighting at this level week in week out.

My next strategy is to bring Nigel Ashton over and get him to show me how its done since he seems to have all the answers. Clearly my main mistake has been teaching my fighers to kick punch knee and elbow rather than employ some mysterious tactics that only Nigel seem to be aware of.

Its a shame that he cant be arsed to use some of his incredible knowledge and insight to actually do something in the sport instead of just pontificating about it. Maybe we'd all be better off.

Has he considered that we go to Thailand and bring Thai trainers over to complement our teaching rather than dominate it. Our fighters have only started to have any success internationally in the past few years specifically because we have been training in Thailand.

Dekkers had his own style and tactics and sometimes they worked sometimes they didnt which you will find is the same with Liam, Andy, Jordan or any of the other top names in the UK.

Dekkers spent a lot of time training in Thailand and couldnt have done as well as he did without understanding Muay Thai. Him and Ronnie didnt come up with a secret strategy they were just special.

I'm looking into flights over to the Isle of Man for Liam to go and train with Nigel and gain from some of his vast knowledge although I might have a few problems pulling him away from me and Chanoy (who actually beat Dekkers ....... twice).

Absolutley brilliant show, best i have been to in 10 years in the sport, well done GMS and all at MSA (I booked my tickets late through Lauren @ Skens who was super efficient).

Fighters represented UK muay thai very well and make us all proud, at the end of the day its HOW you fight not the win thats important. Best possible advert for MT and its gonna be on shy!

Richard Smith, the fighters from your gym serve as an insperation to many in the UK, I aspire to your level as a trainer and think your " Smith System" is just fine!

I love Andy H (in a purely non sexual way) but think Richard showed why another reason those guys are top off the food chain by pulling him out.
Mr Howson, I have no doubt you would've fought until your leg fell off and even then would've tried to fight on!!!!!

On a training note, Thai's invented the sport & created the scoring system, their understanding of this system and ways to exploit it is 2nd to none.
IMO where other cultures may improve is within the training. As ‘westerners’ our understanding of strength & conditioning, nutrition, supplements & access to these facilities is one of our biggest advantages, yet I don’t think used to the maximum. As an athlete I was doing things 10yrs ago that are just about becoming mainstream!!!!

Yes, he understood it then tweaked his own game to beat it on many, many occasions. I think UK MT is so wrapped up in being EXACTLY like Thailand that a strategy beyond that is unthinkable. It's almost a train of thought of "If the Thai's don't do it then it's wrong" and because of that it restricts our guys

Not sure there is any secret mythical stance but this line out of your own comments is exactly what I am talking about

It's whether or not instructors just copy it or look at a way that within the MT rules and scoring criteria it can be beaten.

Dekker and Ronnie Green both where awesome but part of that was born out of just thinking outside the box.

I think we have guys now who can just be as awesome and no matter how much you may not like my point of view I still believe it is the mindset of the trainers that ulitmatley holds them back.

Some trainers are good some are not - its not a general mindset. Muay Thai has to be used to beat Muay Thai you cant do something different and hope that it will result in a KO. There are a lot of different styles and tactics within Muay Thai. Every Thai fighter is different and employs different tactics to beat another - they dont all fight the same way. This includes the actual techniques used, how they pace the fight, the footwork that they use and much more.

Understanding this is the key not just copying what you see on TV or at a stadium. It has nothing to do with trying to be like the Thais.

None of the fighers that lost on saturday did so because they were trying to be like a Thai, they lost for many different reasons that you cant generalise.

I agree that we cant all punch like Anuwat or Kick like Sanchai but each fighter has his own strengths to develop.

You are both right with valid points.

The reason both Dekker and my dad were awesome is that they had an understanding of the thai way and also were able to "think outside the box" as you put it Nigel to out smart and beat the the thais.

It is all down to the individual and strategy. Whether a person has an off day or whether that strategy will work against one fighter and not another.

Adaptation is the key which is somthing that both Dekker and my dad were able to do in order to win

dekker lost just as many as he won against the thais, look how many losses the best fighter on the plnet has got on his record...i think 80loss from 300 fights (saenchai) stop talking comnplete wank nigel

Decker did a seminar in Glasgow a couple of years ago, now i may be wrong but I'm sure that he was asked how much training he did in Thailand and his answer was None!!

Your right Liam and you can learn alot more in defeat than you can from winning.

What makes a great fighter and champion like yourslef is the ability to get back in there and strive to improve and move forward by taking on the best.

Dekker is,was a legend in our sport but he lost to the top level mostly because they had a plans for him,Cherry was ko,d but in rematch kneed him to death,even still he was brilliant still watch him now (loving the moustache)Jomhod teeped him when he set his feet to punch and my point is so what it was ace!!!! as is whats going on now,listen Storey lost but he won the dance off i admire him and so did the crowd.
Richard smith does a great job investing money in thai coaches such as Chanoy etc because he wants the best for his gym,thing is if Liam has won what would people say then? the fighters that are beating thais,Kulebin,Villaume,Petrosyan fight Thai way it works for them,each to their i reckon but i just want us to see the bigger picture i have never seen so many happy faces at a show more so mine lol xx

Excellent show with World class fights. Its as Lee said those fighters can learn from defeat. Liam, Andy, Michael and Andy T fought real World Class opponents, some of the best in the business without doubt.

Looking forward to the MEN show. We keep saying how Thai Boxing should be ahead of UFC ect and that we need to push the sport. I heard Neil say at a UKMF meeting with Paul Hamilton that UFC sold a million pay per view in twenty four hours and that we should be able to do that.

Well now is our chance to stop bickering and really try and get the sport seen the way we want it seen. Everyone come together and make the MEN arena a sell out. 25,000 People creating a real atmosphere on sky TV, well i reckon that could be a massive step in the right direction.

Lee - you are right but your Dad and Dekkers didn't have one strategy that they akways used to when they fought a Thai they used the tactics that they needed to fight the person in front of them whether they were Thai or not.

Sometimes that strategy and their own style and skills worked, sometimes it didn't. They still used Muay Thai style and techniques.

Real understanding of MT has onky come in the UK recenyly and look at the growth in the standard or fighters and promotions in that short time. Give it a few years and I think it will get even better as the depth of experience that we have increases.

I agree with what you say about fighters increasing their exriencce on the amateur circuit to a certain extent but so far in the UK there hasn't really been a fully developed amateur circuit and no funding. Countries like Belarus have government backing and funding so can send their fighters all over the world. And guess where they go ..... Thailand!

Two things occur to me as I read these fascinating posts and they are:

1.Britain has originated many sports which are played by individuals and teams but it can be argued that currently we are not considered world leaders. There are countries which have developed the national sports of other countries to a much higher level of excellence and certainly don't feel the necessity to use a standard model. They adapt and subsequently inspire.

2. Does British/European temperament sometimes impede success when competing against Thais? Very different cultures. This is apparent in international football when Brits play against the cultured skills of other Europeans or the South Americas. Our "grit" isn't always enough.

I agree 100% with you Richard on both counts and thats exactly what I said.

"It is all down to the individual and strategy. Whether a person has an off day or whether that strategy will work against one fighter and not another."

Its all about Adpatation and being able to adapt when necessarry to the person in front of you.

And with regards to the amatuer circuit again I agree with that too in relation to the circuit and other countries getting funding. Something I and others are working hard to get. I was purely pointing out the fact that the more experience you get be it amateur or Pro the better you will be. Where as some people think amateur has "no use a stepping stone to pro as the rules are so different as is the scoring" I totally disagree as all experience is valid and Kulebin and the eastern block countries are a prime example of that.

And yes Robin I have been one of those people fighting on one of those shows.
Strategy and adaptation a key elements to beating anyone as I said also.

I agree with Damien, Vinny and others, this was the best show I have been to for quite some time. A really outstanding show and a great showcase for the sport, not just for the UK Muay Thai scene but for Muay Thai full stop. The fights couldn't have been more exciting and everyone who contributed in any way should be congratulated. There always have to be individual winners and losers but the sport definitely won this weekend. Well done to everyone involved: promoters Master Sken and Dan, MC, officials, commentary team, coaches but most of all the fighters.


There were some excellent displays of skill and courage. The future looks bright for UK Muay Thai, some outstanding performances from our boxers, win or lose all contributed to a great afternoon and evening. I was impressed by the skills demonstrated as well as the courage shown, but particularly skills shown by our developing young boxers. I agree with Richard and Rob that we are 100% right to continue to judge, officiate and train in line with Thai way. I really feel that if the development of UK Muay Thai skills continues at the same rate it has done in recent times, it won't be that long before we have a number of boxers here in the UK who will have the skills to beat top Thais at Muay Thai- as opposed to a modification of it designed to ensure we win.

Well Done to Master Sken on what i believe was a fantastic show,unfortunitley i couldnt make it to the show but every UK fighter was in mind yesterday, master sken you have put so much into the sport over the years and have produced oppertunities for some very worthy fighters in the UK, i myself and im sure many others too would like to say Thankyou, (1) for introducing this wonderful sport to us in the UK and (2) for sticking with us and continueing to produce promotions like sundays.

We need to look long term here.

It is really only recently that the sport has taken off somewhat, although it is still very much 'cult' compared to what it can become.

A few years down the line, when our top fighters of today have their own gyms and have the relevant experience to teach the sport to the highest level, iss when we will start seeing a difference in not just a handful of UK fighters being able to take on the top Thais and give them a fight, but many UK fighters will be able to do this.

This is simply because there are more fighting now that are doing it the right way, as proven by their ability win or lose (as is the norm in this sport), that these individuals then pass on their knowledge to another ten individuals each, for example, and it spirals from there.

Now is really only the beginning imo.

Gutted i missed this show making sure i dont miss the next one just booked tickets for the MEN hope Liam Harrison is on the bill to give support awesome fighter Lundy

The Thais know their game very well and to beat them you need to fight in a unorthodox way.

I read this thread with interest because I am very much into training & training methods.
Nige, could I ask what you believe we (as non Thais) should be doing? I ask this with all seriousness.

As a top level fighter your training regime can be VERY personalised and in the main, fighters will have a weapon that works very well for them.
Biomechanics, mentality, intelligence, heart, ect these things will all play a role in how you fight and how you good you are/will be..... Genetics for the most part!! You can train to improve most things (speed, power, punch resistance etc) but you will always be limited by your genetics……. However it’s the coaches job to adapt to these ‘limitations’ and develop the fighter to his/her strengths.

The fact is Muay Thai scoring is Muay Thai scoring, if you knock someone out then fair play but you still need to have an eye on the judges.
As a fighter you need to be able to adapt to you opponent plus impose your will upon them. A fighters strengths can also become their weakness with the right tactics?

How or why did K1 come about? Although it was created in Japan and based around Karate/kickboxing? I would say many westerners (bigger guys!) are better suited to this style and I thought this is where many of the Dutch/French fighters look to go?

K1 was developed so japanese fighters could win against top thai's.
Essentially a stand-up MMA game. Karate, Kickboxing, Kempo etc....
K1 is judged on heart and aggression, and if we changed the "rules" then we would just end up breeding a load of tough guys, who cant fight MT.

In Thailand, each fighter gets (av) 6hrs training PER DAY....At least 2 or 3hrs 1-on-1 with an ex-stadium champion with experience of over a couple of hundred fights.

The fighters who are doing well, can develop the fitness levels and explosive nature, but the technique/experience is what we appear to be lacking. This is one of the reasons why several gyms in the UK has brought over Thai trainers to develop people in their gym; And why sooo many people travel over to Thailand every year.

To cross-over experience from other sports..... why are Russians so good at chess?
Do you have to change the rules of chess so someone else can win?

Its NOT just Thai's....its the elite level Thai's we are competing against.
Just because someone is Thai, doesnt mean they are unbeatable.

Maybe there's nothing wrong with the training, it's the match-ups? The three Thais fighting were all top level who fight pretty much every month. It's clear there is no one outside of Thailand who can beat Saenchai. The same is arguably true for the other Thais fighting.

Sure there may have been times when ppl have beaten decent Thais in the UK, however I would argue that there is no 59kg or less fighter in the UK, Canada, US or Aust who could beat a ranked Thai in Thailand. Thais fighting overseas often don't train so hard or take the fight as seriously. They are also generally fighting above their normal weight. It's interesting that everybody talks of the importance of 'Thai style' but weights are rarely mentioned.

Maybe UK fighters need to fight lesser opponents and not necessarily Thais? It seems we're being a bit hard on ourselves and putting too much pressure on the fighters.

to be honest when the thais come over and fight a bit heavier i reckon they are stronger cos there not all bleached down and horrible when they fight at stadiums alot of them are proper fucked on the mornings and only have 12 hours to replenish, saenchai is very strong at 60-62kg imo alot ore so than he is at 57when hes boiled down.

Liam, that's very true, apparently there is no money for the Thai above 130 pnds so they don't really have a choice.

When the Thais come over they are treated well, both in and out of the ring. When the fight in Europe this isn't the case and the rules/scoring is different.

When they fight in Japan the rules/scoring are different, so you can see how Japanese could win. Australia has good fighters, but it's very rare that top Thais will fight there.

So I'm not sure there's a problem with the training, just that we're expecting too much from the fighters.

Rather than look at Dekker, what about the eastern Europeans? They are very good at pure MT and don't train in Thailand, but they fight often. Their amateur scene is very professional ; )

Up until a few years ago Artur Kyshenko was still competing at the IFMA's.

Dekker was exceptional in power terms i too have a friend who trains with Ramon and says his power is incredible,people who beat Thais at top level are special,Green,Villaume,Harrison all trained in Thailand people are people and special is special like Ronnie,but the best well up until now was Danny Bille who again fought Thai way,loads who don,t have beaten thais,i think this topic wouldn,t have came up if Liam and Andy had won,but its interesting seeing others views.
Bille is regarded by Thais as the best according to Rob cox i,d agree he played the game very well,Dekker is a legend as is Ronnie,like i stated enjoy them because they all retire,the sports in good health lets keep it healthy x

In the west we generally fight maybe 10-times a year (and thats busy!!!!)

In Thailand, fighters will maybe fight once a month at the stadium, but also fight out in the provinces/show fights etc just for the ring time.
This then builds up about 30-fights a year.
Theres no substitute for experience.

Everyone is too harsh on people about losses, rather than enjoying the sport.
Do people analyse the rules of football if you lose a game?
Do people analyse the rules of pool if you lose a game of pool?
So what makes muay thai any different? Sure you'll look for reasons for the loss and how to improve their own gameplan.

TRAIN LIKE A THAI, FIGHT LIKE A THAI

Through recent media popularity, either via the K1 & UFC tournaments or more flamboyantly through films such as ‘Ong Bak’ and ‘Beautiful boxer’, Muay Thai is receiving international exposure. Its reputation as a devastatingly tough and tenacious martial art is gaining momentum. However, more times than none what we are seeing at these tournaments and certainly in the films, is not ‘Muay Thai’. Muay Thai has been diluted to suit the tournament rules and/or the film audience. We see this locally at our own ‘Muay Thai’ tournaments through ‘C’ or ‘B’ class fights that do not allow elbows or knees to the face. Full rules Muay Thai is 5 x 3 minute rounds with 2 minute breaks and the Nak Muay (boxer) can kick, punch, knee and elbow with full power anywhere on their opponents body or head, the only area not allowed is the groin. Watering down of the rules is akin to saying that no head shots are allowed in western boxing, or that ‘groundwork’ is not allowed in Judo tournaments. The Thais fight full rules from their very first fight, no restrictions and no dilutions. Amateur Thai boxing, where head gear, shin pads, elbow pads and body armour is worn, is becoming more popular in Thailand and the West. Full rules are used and this is certainly the way forward for any acceptance towards the Olympic Games which is the aim for the relevant governing bodies. So why do we lessen the rounds and why do we restrict/dilute the rules of Muay Thai? The answers to my questions have been varied but the general feel is that, for one, most westerners work full time and training is done for a few hours every evening, unlike the Thais who live and train, eat and sleep on their respective camps. A Westerner may have up to 5 or 6 fights a year if he is really pro-active, whereas the Thai will have 15- 20. Shorter rounds therefore make it more acceptable for our training regimes, not having elbows and knees to the head means that, for most of the time, we can return relatively undamaged to work the next week.
There are however, plenty of fighters, here in the west, that fight full rules and they’re pretty good at it too. They hold down full time jobs and still manage to train 6 days a week. The ones that are top of their field are the ones that travel to Thailand and train with the Thais.

The Thais attitude, personality and views are so much different than our own and this provides them with the catalyst to develop into the tough fighters that they are. Thai fighters do not generally have the luxuries, resources and financial securities that Westerners have. Their lifestyle is that much tougher and therefore they cope better with the hardships of training than we in the West do. Their general attitude is to live for the day and to have fun (Sanuk). This in no way means that they are irresponsible as their commitment to their family, their teacher (Kru) and their King and country is legendary.



At a Kiat Muay (boxing camp) the Thai will train twice a day, early morning and evening. Each camp has its own syllabus but generally most fighters will start their day at 6.30 am with a 5-8km run followed by skipping and shadow boxing. Pad work, bag work and techniques follows and this routine is repeated in the evening around 4.30pm. Training is for around 3 hours each session and can be 7 days a week. So already by sheer workload the Thai will be that more efficient. Their diet is good too, the Thais love food and tend to snack eat through most of the day with one main meal in the evening. Rice and noodles provide the necessary carbohydrates for their muscle endurance.
When you have little in the way of luxuries you do not have a sense of detachment or missing from them when you commit your time to arduous training regimes. Such is the way with the Thais; their ‘hardier’ life styles are similar to that of the Mexican boxers, which forges them into the tough fighters that they are.
So you can already see that in addition to commitment, focus, tenacity and endurance, it is attitude that can make the difference between good and great.

One of the Thais greatest attributes though is heart; the language of the ‘proverbial’ heart provides a place of central importance for the Thai.
In Thai the heart is called‘JAI’. The Thais have many metaphors for ‘Jai’ which I touched upon in a previous article of mine called ‘Heart’. For the Nak Muay some of these heart metaphors are indispensable;

• ‘Jai Khem Keng’ (strong heart)
When you believe strongly in yourself then you have Jai khem keng’. If you are in the Army and on the front line and you have been given the order to advance against the enemy, you better have a strong heart or ‘Jai khem keng’. The concept is strength and commitment in oneself come from the heart and success arises from those who possess a strong heart.
• ‘Kamlang Jai (Strength heart)
A person who feels a sense of accomplishment or success possesses ‘Kamlang jai’. The girl who wins the beauty contest or the football player who does well in a game also has ‘Kamlang jai’. After an argument, when one person apologises, then one or both involved will have ‘Kamlang jai’.
• ‘Jai Yen’ (cool heart)
This is the Thai equivalent of a stiff upper lip in the face of adversity or provocation. A person may have suffered an emotional set back or disruption but he or she is able to feel (or give the appearance of feeling) collected and cool emotionally in the face of the problem.

More and more Westerners are travelling to Thailand to train in the various camps in Thailand. Commitment and heart are there too, I have seen many ‘farangs’ (foreigners) train their ‘hearts’ out. Some fight on the local shows and some are successful.

More and more camps are accepting westerners to train in Muay Thai and, as well as promoting their art internationally, it also brings in richly deserved income for the relevant camps.

When training at a Kiat Muay the Thais are looking for commitment and, as I stated earlier, heart. Some westerners just pop in for a workout as ‘tourists’ some just train for a couple of days. Basically you get out what you put in; the Thai trainer will take you through the rudiments and give you a damn good pad workout, however if you want to truly learn the art of Muay Thai you need to show dedication, you need turn up morning and evening, day in day out.

To truly understand any martial art you need to go to its roots, to seek out the culture behind the art and this is no more so than training Muay Thai in Thailand, training with the Thais, training like a Thai.

However, in order to fight like a Thai, you not only need to train like a Thai but you also need to eat, sleep and above all ‘think’ like a Thai

Noi, this is very true, especially about being harsh about losses and the experience. I'm worried the UK is painting itself into a corner by always bringing the best and having huge shows.

Even ranked Thais will fight in a village fair at times, maybe it's their hometown or their doing someone a favor.

All Thais are fed a diet of fights on short notice, different weights and having little if any knowledge of their opponent. They will do this for 50+ fights before hitting Bangkok.

It's not about training, it's about the fights and there's plenty to be had in Thailand, plenty from the UK train there, but don't fight so often. Why?

Since trainers have started bringing Thais over to their gyms to train their fighters, have they noticed a marked difference in that fighters ability that would otherwise not have happened?

In response to crippler. I think the single most important thing we should do is return boxing to the forefront of our game. In the early days boxing was very successful for the UK fighters but dwindled away when word got out that "Boxing doesn't score as well" which turns out to be a load of nonsense.

See, there lies a good point. The Thais didn't use boxing that much so we stopped doing it? Why....? Because the Thais didn't. So we took away a piece of our own game to be like them!! Who's going to deny we are trying to be like the Thai's now

Interesting to see Dekker never trained with the Thais and instead of a trip to Thailand would it not be best for a trip to Holland. I hate all the bowing that goes on and never ever do it unless I see Master Sken. I do this because that is his culture and then we shake hands which is my culture.

Getting the Thai trainers over in the UK isn't going to make us beat the Thai's it's going to make us like them. The whole point of my original question was based on that. What can the trainers do to get around the Thai's clever way of fighting. Do we for example adapt a more western style type of boxing in MT where our boxing becomes clean, effective and flowing or de we still try and punch from a Thai stance which I don't think is effective at all. And before anyone says "Yeah but he might he you with this and that" So find away round it.

I don't think training with the Thais is a waste of time but if I was training someone at that level they would never even see the inside of a Thai camp. Then when the fight came along the Thai would be just as disadvantaged as the next guy wondering what might happen. Instead of "Oh my mate down the road taught him to ..............." I know what to expect

There is no right or wrong answer in all this but I think the whole "Thai thing" is a fashion.

Wakeling, Keddle, Trainor, Harper Howson myself ahve all beaten top thais, in the last 3 years i have fought 7 or 8 ranked fighters or champions and 2 boxers of the year iv won 4 and lost 4, your goin on like no one has or ever will beat them, and the lets go to holland thing you said was plain ridiculous, Dekker was given a gift from god and that was a granite chin and dynamite in both hands, obviously he was more than that but not every fighter can punch like him so they have to change different aspects of there game like clinching, adding a bit of trickery etc etc...when i9 go train in thailand they dont try change my style to theres, theres no such thing as a THAI STYLE, all thai fighters fight different,you got bangers, clinchers technical fighters etc

Perhaps a bit of perspective, if you look at how many professional fighters there are in Thailand vs UK, then the achievement of UK fighters is perhaps a lot better than it should be statistically.
Maybe the top Thais are better because they are the cream of a lot bigger sample of fighters.

My personal opinion is this:-

I tend to agree with Nigel on the part of training to beat a fighter, not train to fight like him...In the way that any fighter be them a boxer or MMA fighter etc would train to beat an opponent by recognising their skills and weaknesses and then training and fighting in a manner in which to beat that person.

However that is specific to that type of opponent. Training in general terms means that you need to be on top of your game and realistically you need to be well rounded in all aspects of your style to be able to compete at a top level consistently.

Where there may have been issues over the years is in the way that the likes of Dekkers fought as well as other fighters from the same era. People say that the dutch style is typically 1,2,lowkick etc...Although taking away the piss take element of that summary the dutch did have a style, like many have mentioned where boxing was and still is a big part. I have trained (in a seminar) with Dekkers and seen the dvd's of his training / fighting and do agree that the dutch have their own style of Thai Boxing which has been extremely succesful over the years. So this would tie in with what Nigel says when he says you don't need to train like a thai to beat one......

However.......(and herein may lie the issue).......

If you watch the Dekker DVD interview there was a few times where it is mentioned that Ramon and Cor and the dutch team thought that Ramon had won a fight but the decision was given to the Thai...Everyone knows that this happens a lot and from my own experience of trips to Thailand where I have trained and spectated in the sport I have seen many fights where the decision is awarded to a fighter that 'I' thought had lost...
This brings into question the whole debate about knowing the scoring system and understanding what is required in any one fight to win.

I believe that MT in this country has come on in leaps and bounds in the last ten years due to a better understanding of the rules and also because the world is a smaller place and it is becoming easier for people to train in Thailand or for people to bring the Thais over to train us here.
For westerners to be able to beat Thais (on points) we need to understand what scores and also what needs to be done in a fight to be able to secure a points win...This is where we need to train like a Thai to beat a Thai.

I would be interested to know how many fights Dekker had against Thais, how many of those he won and then how were they won......I would imagine that a large majority of the ones he won were by KO.

In summary (cos love to ramble)

To beat a Thai on points you need to know how the fight is scored and I think this is where the 'Train like a Thai to beat a Thai' comes in....If we could win them all by KO then train however you want...

I would like to thank to all trainers, fighters,officials,UKMF and WMC officials, Rob Cox, Ralph Beale,Paul Hamilton, Neil Harrison, Dave Croft,Louis Mechia,Thakoon Pongsupa,Tony Myers and Stephan Fox.They all worked with me very closely.

I am so pleased with the show and I enjoyed every moment of it.I am glad Liam R likes my Moon Walk,relax and fun.Chloe Bruce was brilliant as usual.It was an honour to have Grand Master Anthony Wee gave a short and impressive demonstration his extraordinary CHI.

All our UK fighters have nothing to lose, every fights you can learn from them, then train harder and wiser.They have beaten Thai fighters before,no shame in losing this fight.Saenchai is a legend, Sakeddao, Rungravee and Kulebin are acceptional fighters and World Class!

However I always believe in our own UK fighters for example:Liam,Andy,Michael, Panicos, Andy T, Damien,Rob,Stephen M,Rung, Jodan C,Jordan W, Ally, Tim T, James F, Lee C,Liam R,Dean J and many more... They are excellent fighters and people,keep up good works and training.My advise is to learn about yourself(strenght and weaknesses)thus you will understand your opponent and spend real time to study your opponent's very wisely,carefully and professionally.
We will be working together many years to come.

All trainers were so cooperative and once again thank you to you all.
Finally many thanks to all spectators, who travalled from all corners of UK.
You all are great supporters.I hope you all will support our shows at M.E.N.Arena Saturday 27th March 2010 and Saturday 29th May 2010 at EXCEL,LONDON.
It will be very exciting year for everyone and it's great year for Muay Thai.

What the Thais dont realise is that there was so much more at Stake for some of the British fighters than there was for the Thai Team

Rungrawee's face shows no fear, apart from when you mention Sambuca

i was out the front when rungrawee and saenchai got back to the hotel. they fell out of the taxi and were laughing their arses off! then rungraweee smoked about 90 tabs on the spot before getting a bit confused with the lift and going to bed.
saenchai drunk a ridiculous amount of sambuca in the sports bar, i think everyone in there bought him a shot.

My First Post since the show!

Pity the thread digressed a little there but hopefully it's back on track and collectively we can all look back with fond memories on what was both an EXCEPTIONAL show and a turning point for UK Muay Thai.

What a show it was too, great venue, great audience, great demos and GREAT fights, what more could anyone ask for?

I must give a huge heartfelt thanks to Grand Master Sken and Dan Green for giving me the opportunity to present in front of such a big audience and with the added excitement of being filmed for Sky tv, you made one MC a very happy man.

I could go on and on and tell each of the fighters how inspiring they were but it would simply take too long.

I'll surmise by saying well done to everyone involved, from the fighters, corners and coaches to the event staff who were fabulous, the production crew, the showbiz (ie Vinny, Rob & Flic) and finally the promoters Grand Master Sken and Dan Green.

What is frightening is that last Saturday's show is likely to be the smallest event on the MSA caledar.

Finally, it was great to meet so many good people on Saturday, some old faces and even more new ones. The antics at the hotel bar up until 5am were hilarious... if not scandalous!

Looking forward to M.E.N Arena in March.
